1/5 🚨 European Commission slammed for breaching transparency laws 🚨

🔎 The European Ombudsperson has found that the Commission disregarded important transparency rules while preparing the #Europol Regulation, which is a part of the legislation to "counter migrant smuggling" ➡️ https://www.ombudsman.europa.eu/en/press-release/en/215989

The Ombudsperson's inquiry follows a complaint lodged by @edri and Platform for Undocumented Migrants (@PICUM) on behalf of the #ProtectNotSurveil coalition 👏🏾

3/3

3️⃣ Unsubstantiated:

❌ No impact assessment.
❌ No proof it works.
Even the European Data Protection Supervisor @EDPS warns it violates EU law and puts #privacy & safety at risk.

This reform won’t protect people. It’ll criminalise solidarity, erode democracy, and put everyone under surveillance.

Civil society calls on MEPs:

❌ Reject the Europol Regulation
✅ Protect rights, privacy & democracy.

2/3

1️⃣ Unlawful:

The proposal expands Europol’s #surveillance capacities, allowing it to collect and use biometrics like #FacialRecognition on a massive scale, without transparency and effective safeguards against abuse.

2️⃣ Unsafe:

This reform encourages data collection & data sharing from and with third countries, including authoritarian regimes.

It turns “anti-smuggling” into a blank cheque for surveillance against migrants, NGOs & journalists.

The European Parliament votes on its report about the planned expansion of surveillance powers for #Europol on Tuesday.

* It fails to protect migrants or reduce border deaths.
* Is a power grab by Europol.
* It criminalises migrants and solidarity organisers.

We call on MEPs to vote against!

European Parliament LIBE committee votes on the #Europol report next week.

MEPs 👏 must 👏 vote 👏 against!

🐎 It is a Trojan horse for surveillance disguised as „anti-smuggling“
💰 It would expand the budget for a problematic agency

The EU must take responsibility for forcing migrants into life-threatening situations, change its hostile border & migration policies, and reject the expansion of Europol’s digital surveillance powers.

We will publish our position paper on the EU’s #Europol reform soon!
In the week leading up to the launch, we reflect on this controversial European police cooperation agency.

As Protect Not Surveil coalition, we challenge the use of digital technologies at different levels of EU policies and advocate for the ability of people to move and to seek safety and opportunity without risking harm, surveillance or discrimination.

Follow us and #ProtectNotSurveil to learn more!
