While down the road earlier checking out the creek after the recent rains, I found this little fellow hugging a twig upside down.

It's a young Eastern Water Dragon, and was probably snoozing until I tramped by.

A small Eastern Water Dragon, upside down on a twig, hugging it. Its tail is draped over a fork.

A small sample of the many Eastern Water Dragons around campus as the weather warms up.

They all have their defined territories but sometimes the world's slowest territorial disputes occur, whereby an invading party very very slowly encroaches on an existing territory and there is much head bobbing and circling.

A juvenile water dragon that was oddly quite near an older adult. It is a greyish lizard about 20cm long with faint stripes laterally across its body and a row of very short spikes along its spine.

An adult male Eastern Water Dragon. This one has the red flush of breeding season on its chest and belly, and the spikes on the back of its neck are more prominent.

Another juvenile water dragon. It has bolder stripes and mottling and blends in nicely with the tree bark of the tree it is sitting on.

One half of a territorial dispute. This large male is the interloper. It has its mouth slightly ajar and is trying to look threatening.
