I'm seeing fungus/mycelium-based materials in the news again as potentially green alternatives and it's time to remind people that "mushrooms build large underground networks of mycelium" is wrong. Correct* is "the large underground networks of mycelium occasionally grow some mushrooms". Writing the first is like if we couldn't usually see apple trees and wrote that "apples grow large wooden support structures".

Except that she's not, the headline writers' clumsy wording ignoring the astronomer royal for Scotland, Professor Catherine Heymans.

"Planetary scientist Michele Dougherty becomes UK's first female astronomer royal".
