Given the discussion of the fairness of inheritance tax is bubbling up again, I just want to make the point that it is not 'double taxation';
Inheritance tax is levied on the recipient of the inheritance, who by definition has paid no tax on this wealth as it is not theirs, it is a gift (albeit an expected one);
yes, the estate is liable, but that estate has passed 'ownership' and its new owners are receiving a lump sum which they haven't earned nor paid tax on!
