Australians to get at least three hours a day of free solar power - even if they don’t have solar panels
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/nov/03/australians-to-get-at-least-three-hours-a-day-of-free-solar-power-even-if-they-dont-have-solar-panels

Good to see the ALP making a step in the right direction to tackle Australia's cost of living crisis.
It's only fair that the benefits of free electricity from residential rooftop solar are shared with all consumers.

Next:
- Investigate price-gouging for "network fees" and "poles & wires" charges by electricity wholesalers.
- Make electricity companies pay households a fair price for putting electricity they generated with their own rooftop solar into the grid. Currently, electricity companies take it for free or pay households a miserly feed-in rate. Some other countries have regulations to make power companies pay households equal rates for "give and take".

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day ...

"No one will be any doubt that the days of treating energy prices as a private commodity and expecting the market to save New Zealand jobs and regional New Zealand, that type of folly in our view, has run its course."

#ShaneJones, 2025

The solution though is not fast tracking more coal and gas, but taking advantage of how easy and cheap it is to decentralise renewables compared to building thermal generation.

The obvious one is #RooftopSolar. Apparently the electricity from the largest centralised solar plant in Aotearoa could have been supplied by covering rooftops, instead of land that could be farms or reserves;

"... the total land area of the solar farm [is equal to] 14 of the largest building rooftops in Auckland.

The map below distributes this power more evenly to communities by utilising the rooftops of schools and supermarkets, totalling 167 buildings."

"In March, Transpower reported there were 30GW of new renewable generation 'in the pipeline' — about half of which were solar farms. While most of the projects were in an early stage, the state-owned enterprise believed the country was already on track to more than double our generation."

BTW why on earth is #Transpower structured as a corporation? The national grid it stewards is a natural monopoly, and it's 100% publicly-owned and always has been.

"Greenpeace is also advocating for household solar projects to be given priority over large scale commercial projects. 'Just because energy production is renewable, it’s not necessarily sustainable', Greenpeace lead climate campaigner Christine Rose says. 'The adverse environmental and social impacts of the centralised ‘Think Big’ generation model can be addressed by rooftop solar and battery storage'.”

"The government can also make electricity more affordable by supporting not-for-profit power companies. Another good move would be to help more households to install rooftop solar by providing access to long-term low-interest finance."
