for #FreeSoftwareAdvent, I'd like to highlight OpenJDK, and the #JVM. If Sun hadn't licensed it GPL, I would have moved on.

OpenJDK is the complete developer's kit, including a runtime that powers back ends for a whole lot of web apps and APIs, often chosen for its performance, and parallelism.
