📘 New Publication: Promising stories from the GraspOS Pilot studies
In this booklet, we present the implementation pathways and outcomes of the nine GraspOS Pilot studies, aimed at advancing Responsible Research Assessment (RRA) and strengthening Open Science practices across the European Research Area.
In the past three years, the GraspOS Pilots co-designed, validated, and evaluated Open Science-aware indicators, tools, and services for RRA across three assessment contexts:
* Funding agencies and national stakeholders using infrastructure to support funding evaluation processes.
* Universities, including departments and research groups, interested in recruitment and assessment.
* Thematic disciplines that establish domain-specific assessment criteria aligned with disciplinary needs.
The booklet offers concise narratives highlighting the activities, results, and insights from each Pilot.

"We should also optimize the publication model and allow more publications in which studies are accessible free of charge for both authors and readers. When I talk to former fellow students, many of whom work in the financial sector, they shake their heads when I tell them about the logic of the funding model in academia: Scientists give their work to a journal for free and then universities have to pay these publishers to publish a study and give them access to these publications."
"Reviews are also produced free of charge, and editors often work without pay. This is how journals and publishers make a profit based on the prestige of their journals and the pressure to publish. This must change. But instead of resolutely tackling such systematic errors, we still talk too much about individual misconduct." (Anna Abalkina, in F&L interview, translated with DeepL)

@nicebread This is a crucial question to discuss in the open and possibly create a statement from it somewhere for future reference...
Should the open science network commit to the #DORA and #CoARA agreements and therefore not include researchers quantitative metrics at all ?

As we integrate #OpenAlex data into the #Bonfire#OpenScience flavor, we're displaying familiar metrics: works count, citations, h-index, research topics, institutional affiliations...
These might be exactly what you need, or perhaps just a starting point.
What additional information would help you find collaborators or understand someone's work better?
We're opening this design process to the open science community. Share what works, what doesn't, what's missing.

However, I am very skeptical about displaying the h-index and i10 index (and probably also about the overall citation count). With #DORA and #CoARA, we want to get away from these indexes. (They are readily available - but that's their deceptive seduction).
To stay in the analogy: At a campfire gathering, I am looking for deep (and also funny and affiliative) conversations with fellow researchers. If there is a guy shouting out his impressive h-index as a greeting, I would immediately leave.
If we try to build a utopian community place, we should not recreate the dysfunctional incentive structures of default academia.
