#eduroam has been named one of the 13 Dutch brilliant breakthroughs by the Dutch Research Council (NWO)

Created in 2002 by Klaas Wierenga, eduroam started as a simple idea: make Wi-Fi secure, easy & free for students and researchers, wherever they go.

Today, eduroam connects people at almost 40,000 locations in 106 countries. In 2024 alone, it recorded over 8.4 billion authentications.

@hauschke @leonido Bei allem Positivem, bei dem ich dabei bin - #eduroam ist elitär, freies WLAN/Freifunk für alle Bürger:innen wäre hier ja auch eine Chance gewesen bei so vielen Standorten nahe dem öffentlichen Raum.

Für externe Gäste musste ich an TH Köln damals WLAN vorbestellen, kam dann per Hauspost für den Tag.

Es ist auch eine perfekte Parabel für den Elfenbeinturm Academia. Wer hat, dem wird gegeben. 😉

@leonido Guck Dir mal den Hashtag #eduroam an. Das ist wirklich eines der wenigen universell geliebten Aspekte des akademischen Lebens. Ein fantastisches Beispiel für Interoperabilität, Standardisierung und internationale Kollaboration.

Now at UBC Vancouver with a really interesting colourful Fediverse crowd. @reiver opening the #fedicon #fedicon2025, encourages masking - actually many do anyway, and masks are provided for free for anyone. Now @evan keynote. Evan goes back into the early (pre)history of today's social webs.

Sidenote: small things I enjoy are that instantly all my devices are connected to #eduroam #eduroamliebe , another one is decent coffee right at the spot.
