Laura Kate Dale says there are rumours that Unbound was expecting a big investment and decided to pre-spend it by dipping into author royalties.

#Boundless#Unbound

Laura Kate Dale - LauraKBuzz @laurakbuzz.bsky.social
The TLDR as I understand - the company expected an incoming investment for a magazine project, took money out the author royalties account to pre spend the investment, the investment fell through, author money can't be repaid by investment.
That's my good faith understanding of those events.

#PSA: authors and writers, If you don't follow the Writer Beware blog, you may want to start now: Victoria Strauss is a great source to learn about the scum looking to defraud you--from bogus 'marketing' packages that cost you money and do nothing for you, to outright fraudulent publishers--like Unbound has proven to be.

Bankruptcies of Unbound and Albert Whitman & Co Put Authors Between a Rock and a Hard Place - Writer Beware

A Hellacious Mess: Unbound Established in 2011, UK-based crowdfunded publisher Unbound styled itself the Kickstarter for books and was widely heralded as the next big idea in publishing. Heady words like “disruption” and “paradigm” were tossed around, and the company’s launch garnered substantial positive media coverage. (This blog post from Nail Your Novel provides anRead More

Tom Cox: "I was invited onto BBC Radio 4's You And Yours today to talk about Unbound, who owe me and their other authors around £650,000 in total, which is not even taking into account the readers they have refused to refund."

So, I think it's time I begin, in detailed specifics, talking about the mess that is Unbound / Boundless as a book publisher, in essence stealing most of a years royalties from me and many other authors, as a result of poor financial decisions, and legal BS.
Please read and share this thread.

Daniel Hardcastle, author of The Paradox Paradox, is owed £40k.

Daniel Hardcastle
@dan.nerdcubed.co.uk
I discovered yesterday, in a mass email sent at 3am, that I will not be receiving the roughly £40,000 that my publisher Unbound/ Boundless owes me for pre-order sales of The Paradox Paradox. The payment for five years of work, gone.

Tom Cox, author of many books, published seven through Unbound. He’s owed more than £20k.

If this publisher - formerly Unbound, now Boundless
- gave me all the money they actually owed me, it would amount to over £20,000. Now, I suspect there will be nothing. Not for me and not for the large number of other authors who have received promise after promise that Unbound have reneged on.

Most authors only wrote one book for Unbound. I wrote seven. I evangelised about this publisher for years, about what I believed they stood for, as my experience of working with them became more and more disappointing, stressful and damaging to my mental & physical health. What a trusting fool I was

Without Substack, without the books l've broken my back selling myself in the last 3 months, I would be utterly screwed right now. And this latest blow has happened on the same week my partner & I found out we are getting kicked out of the house we rent in two months. I'm shellshocked.

Small Robots, who I think published a picture book of their art work, is owed an unspecified amount.

Oh wait, no: got a lengthy, whiny e-mail at 3am explaining that this poor widdle company can't pay us authors what we're owed like it said it would because it still isn't financially viable and btw the selfless executives have all been heroically working unpaid so please don't be mean uwu.

Just wanted to update this because I think it's important to report honestly on the demise of Unbound: I have been told by Boundless I will be paid what l'm owed over a number of installments in the coming months. Which is probably the most transparency l've had since day one toh.
