🐾 A roadmap is a documented plan of action that structures future work. Having a checklist of things to do (and already done!) can help garner momentum while also making your plans more transparent for prospective users.

Roadmaps should document what features are planned over short- and long-term, outline what steps need to be taken to achieve these goals, and delegate/credit work to specific individuals.

✨ The Journal of Open Source Software @joss is a great venue for writing a software review. They tend to focus on technical aspects, but if you prefer to focus on application-oriented feedback, Archäologische Informationen (https://journals.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/index.php/arch-inf) is happy to take software reviews.

Take a look here for a small example: https://doi.org/10.11588/ai.2022.1.95272

✨ Code reviews are constructive, arms length commentary on published research software. In addition to providing structured feedback to maintainers, they help raise awareness of a tool. This is a win-win for developers and users alike!

Three weeks ago, we kicked off the first-ever #Maintainathon at the United Nations, and memories are beginning to settle in.

Together with this group of highly experienced open source maintainers, we created a special moment at #UNOpenSourceWeek.

Their hands-on expertise shaped the conversations and brought real-world insight into building open digital infrastructure — work done by few, but essential to all of us.

We’re kicking off the 2025 maintain-a-thon today at UN Open Source Week! It’s taking place in the Economic and Social Council Chamber of the UN in New York. This is perfect because maintaining public digital infrastructure is fundamental to economic and social development.

The maintain-a-thon follows an unconference format. The FOSS experts from our delegation proposed core topics grounded in real-world experience with open source maintenance.

They’ll be joined by over 70 registered participants, ready to collaborate, learn, and share. Our goal: for every participant to leave with both a “Today I Learned” insight and a “Tomorrow I Will” action, concrete steps that strengthen not just individual projects, but the global open source ecosystem as a whole.

Why is this important? Because a healthy, collaborative open source ecosystem is essential to safeguarding digital sovereignty, innovation, and economic resilience.

As part of United Nations Open Source Week, we’re convening a delegation of 12 open source experts whose work sustains the digital infrastructure we all rely on. Their presence brings critical, hands-on experience into international conversations on digital public goods, security, and innovation. They will form the core of our #maintainathon and contribute to the thematic direction.
