You can also get it through #FDroid or the APKs I publish.
If you use https://fdroid.fedilab.app you get updates immediately.

Btw this is not true. 3.43.2 hasn't been released yet on F-Droid (it was released yesterday, but the use of inmediately implies that it should have been released by now on F-Droid)
As for the poll, few people are going to want to use Mastodon through an app in Google Play (they should get F-Droid) and those who do probably don't need forks. If removing Fedilab from Google allows you to remove your Google account, do it.

Are you by any chance not using the fdroid repository you quoted and (still) have it installed from fdroid's own repository? You have to install *and* use fdroid.fedilab.app to get the immediate updates.

Interesting. The first screenshot looks alright.
I once had the issue with not getting updates anymore for Threema. They recommended removing and re-adding the repository. This solved the issue for me. Maybe you want to try that?

I've always installed Fedilab releases from Google. When I try to do it now through F-Droid, it acts like a completely different app instead of updating the one I installed from Google. Do I have to delete the original one (and lose all my settings) and then install and set up the one from F-Droid?

You can export your settings from the Google version and import them into the F-Droid version. If you have problems receiving notifications or selecting a notification provider (like ntfy) after doing that, log out of your Fediverse account in Fedilab and log back in to create a new notification subscription.

The main problem is probably the reach. When I dumped WhatsApp and switched to Signal, I lost a lot of contacts. Yes, some followed immediately, some later, but a lot won't follow.
I'm fine with either, and I understand your concerns. Also, I'm happy with using less Google. But I think it will put a significant dent in Fedilab's user base. 
@apps My experience is that I've been getting Fedilab from F-Droid for years now. Probably. Though I started with the Google Store and I was happy to pay for it. But Mastodon and Fedi are not very mass kind of thing, so we're probably fine with alternative distribution ways. This might change when they make installing off the Store — named for distraction as "offloading" — blocked. I guess it boils down to your numbers.
@apps I wouldn't do it since I haven't sign up for a developer account but if you already did google play does add more discoverability to your apps
technically, you can act like a trojan horse and use your app to send more people from google to f-droid
@apps Well, the answers you receive here are going to be biased.
Play Store is full of crap and, despite being the store most people use, it doesn't mean your apps will have more visibility, especially because Big Techs are from USA and they don't like . Also normies usually know about the fediverse by word of mouth so...
As the developer, the ultimate decision is yours.

With the way google is going I'm pretty sure they are gonna kick off FOSS apps at some point and side loading is gonna be a thing of the past at some point. I feel like people need to embrace FOSS and open source devices and stores and OSs more rather then staying in the big tech prison system
My main issue as a solo dev is that Google asks for more and more personal information. I am not sure making my address and phone number public is worth it.
