I now own a cathode ray oscilloscope! Just need to pick it up tomorrow, and then test/fix/calibrate as necessary.
“Connect a DC voltmeter to measure the voltage at TP10 (X74-1370) using a high voltage probe and check the voltage for -1.75kV +/- 0.08kV reading on the meter”
*checks*
Ima need a new multimeter that can handle more than 1kV
@jpm there are HV divider probes, worth having a vaguely safe one of you're doing any HT work
“Apply a line voltage (50/60Hz) to channel 1 input”
Hey @s0 will you kill me if I make an AS/3112 to BNC cable?
@s0 that’s kinda what I figured - if I didn’t kill myself then you’d kill me instead
I do appreciate that every single component inside this machine is documented in its manual
And by every component, i mean LITERALLY EVERY component
THE BEAST ARRIVES
And it’s going to need a bath before it comes inside.
I’m going to end up buying a 40kV 1000:1 ratio multimeter probe #StraightOuttaShenzen aren’t I?
Right, time for a bath. I think it’s mostly diesel soot?
Top panel off, rinse it under the host, scrub with warm water with dishwashing detergent, rinse it off, into the oven to express-dry because it’s made out of steel
Can definitely see where the cooling vents are open to the world
Screen protector off, it’s holding the front bezel on
Bottom off as well, there’s more front bezel clips underneath
Disassemble the sweep time / div knob, now that’s holding on the front bezel
2 small grub screws to get the front knob off, and 3 tiny brass screws holding the larger ring to the mechanism
Oh, good, that little tab at about the 2 o’clock position on the Delay Time dial is meant to come off, I didn’t just break it off
Ok while it’s arse is off I’ll give it a good wash. You’re allowed to wash your own arse, it won’t turn you gay or anything.
Pre-wash, first rinse, soapy water wash, second rinse
Alright, one plug and the front bezel is OFF!
Pre-wash, rinse, soapy water wash, rinse. Now into the oven on VERY low to dry fully and quickly
This was obviously a frequently-used tool. The grease stains caught a lot of diesel soot, and needed a decent scrub to get clean. There’s definitely some petroleum residue in those areas because those areas look clean but are still hydrophobic

Now carefully considering how to proceed. Am thinking, quick vacuum with a soft brush attachment to get the worst of it out, attack the front panel knobs and connectors with baby-grade wet wipes.
Obviously I don’t want to put any tap water anywhere near the electronics, but I am a bit concerned about static electricity generated by the vacuum cleaner.
Maybe outside and spray it with an air blower instead. No fans in this thing to generate stray voltages…
Air blower and a paint brush! Came up a treat!
Yeah that’s looking pretty good now
Yeah only thing left to do now is attack the front and back panels with baby wipes, then hit the switches with contact cleaner
But first, I need to get some drugs
On second thoughts, maybe hit the switches with orange oil degreaser first
Bubble bath!
Hey @s0 should I refresh the mains plug or leave it?
@s0 … belay that question, yes it will need to be done BECAUSE ITS NOT EARTHED!
@s0 look technically I can see the reason for it, but if it was me I’d put a clearly marked switch on the back of the unit, and I think I’ll do just that. Maybe replace the cable too, make it a bit longer (and to modern standards with a larger earth conductor)
