A small percentage of people deny or have little knowledge of climate change. The greatest issue is the billions of people who agree with the science and have great concern yet aren't doing anything about it. They remain silent and let the voices of deniers to stand out.
@evan
> It is obscene to be a grown human being on planet Earth in 2026 and not have any idea what actually causes climate change.
Yeah. What causes climate change is, in large part, the burning of fossil fuels.
“In both [the USA and Canada], most of the electricity consumed by data centres is produced from fossil fuels, which also meet most of the increase to 2030.”
https://www.iea.org/reports/energy-and-ai/energy-supply-for-ai
*Any* fossil fuel burned to power a #GenAI data centre, is causing climate change.
There is no feasible benefit to society, that comes anywhere near the cost to society from burning those fossil fuels for the gargantuan energy requirements of a #GenAI data centre.
This is why it's correct to link the false promise of #GenAI to the real existential threat of #ClimateChange.
Are there multiple industries emitting greenhouse gases? Of course there are. But this specific industry is obviously out of balance, and must be stopped.
I guessed this was a sub-toot (and found the relevant thread you replied to); not weighing in there.
In any case, animal agriculture one of the largest contributors to climate change. But whenever vegans like myself point that out, we're told that our personal consumption habits don't make a difference as long as multinational corporations keep doing yadda yadda whatever, I don't have the strength to argue back. I'm a vegan for ethical reasons first and foremost anyway.
@funcrunch you will not hear that from me. Those people don't know shit. Fuck them. Livestock account for 10-15% of global GHG emissions. Reducing or eliminating meat from your diet is one of the best things a person can do to fight climate change.
