@neil I use PhotoSync to run scheduled backups to an SMB server wirelessly — coupled with a VPN it also works away from the home.
@neil immich is the business. For me a perfect replacement for Google Photos. Immediate WiFi sync at home (I could compel it via VPN + WiFi when away), recognition of people, geolocation w map, and... Privacy. I still have to upload older content but overall best new app of the last year -- I waited until it was stable.
Album sharing possible too.
@neil I’m happily using Immich on my iPhone and have used the iOS app to sync 46k photos from my iCloud account to my own server.
The server side of things in Immich is quite nice too - one of the few times that I haven’t wanted to throw the computer out of the window whilst using Docker!
The whole thing has been a surprisingly slick experience, particularly given how locked down iOS is!
Which reminds me, I must donate some money to them for this awesome software!
@neil @samueljohnson it definitely uploads videos from android. I don't think the face detection features work on videos though
@neil Yes. Can do.
I haven't loaded any so far but will be looking to get off Vimeo, which I've been happy with, and might try it for that. Have shortlisted Bunny and DailyMotion (both in EU).
@neil Annoyingly I don’t think I can completely ditch the built-in stuff in iOS thanks to how deeply integrated everything is 😞
I wish Apple would give developers APIs to provide their own storage as an iCloud alternative, or even completely swap out things like photo management for third party apps, but still be able to integrate with everything the same way that the first party stuff does.
@neil it’s genuinely very impressive software and so much better than what I was expecting when I first looked at self-hosting my own stuff after Apple removed Advanced Data Protection end-to-end encryption from the UK.
At the moment I’m mostly using Immich as a backup repository for all of my photos in iCloud, but I’ve been thinking about drastically cutting down the size of the iCloud photo library to save on how much I pay Apple for storage.
