What amount of touchscreen-only controls should cars have?

@NanoRaptor

You forgot the option of "None".

Touchscreens should never be used in safety-critical systems.

Every control that takes the driuver's attention away from driving is a safety-critical problem.

@NanoRaptor I think the car we chose most recently get the balance pretty bang on. Critical stuff gets a button, with screens used where the experience is too dynamic to cope with physicality. Plus it looks like an Atari 2600, so I feel like you’ll vibe :)

The interior of a Honda e, with a screen stretching the width of the dash, but also physical buttons for climate control, drive mode and others.

@NanoRaptor my brother's fucking Civic has a physical "Climate" button. Its only purpose is to bring up the A/C button on the touchscreen. When you press the climate button, it takes 5-8 seconds for the AC button to appear.

Once the A/C button appears, it automatically disappears after 3 seconds. If you miss it, you get to do this all over again. It's a perfect interaction for ensuring that your eyes are off of the road.

Fuck Android Auto. Fuck it with a rusty chainsaw.
