@neil The men who do this have ruined running.

Woman largely can't join the culture of a friendly wave while passing and have to simply not engage in any interaction with any man. I feel this every time I have to decide; do I wave in passing, and if I do when I'm then blanked. This shows that the men who do this are also runners.

Calling it out isn't enough. I nearly never see it happen, even though it happens enough to be a real problem for women. We have to proactively change this culture in our running circles, part of the problem is hiding in this group. Cat calling is never ok, you wouldn't do it to a male stranger. But also examine your motives if you wave or say hi, are you doing it for the same reason you do when you see another man or are you imagining more?

@neil I often create extra space women when I see it's just myself and them on the pavement.

I've been called out on it before and it's weird to explain but most women just head down keep walking.

I wish it didn't suck so much to exist in the world for people. I love chatting with neighbors when I'm walking around. They shouldn't have to feel unsafe to engage with anyone.

I'm happy to support anything that makes women feel safer out there.

@neil I think the men who don't behave like that *do* try and challenge such behaviour, but they are increasingly divided from those who do, or the perpetrators are alone/in small groups in motor vehicles - only the Police have the authority and skills to stop someone elses vehicle safely (which they are at least doing)
