That's not a joke. Usenet was a social media (a) distributed using a federation of servers and (b) pre-dated even Fidonet.

@timbray That's my site. Yes, Usenet is "not dead yet" - https://tenor.com/en-GB/view/alive-dead-im-not-dead-yet-gif-13642579 . These days most of the traffic is for "dodgy downloads" - binary files of problematic provenance. But a few dinosaurs like me cling on to it as another text communication medium that's not under the control of crackpot billionaires or rapacious corporations. For my preferred programming language the primary forum is still https://newsgrouper.org/comp.lang.tcl .

@timbray Wow, I guess it only takes a few NNTP feeds to keep it alive. I ran a minuscule feed when I was living in the Santa Cruz mountains 30+ years ago, but even back then the formerly decent groups were getting crapified with loud/obnoxious/spammy posts and posters.
Still, got my first job in the US by posting my extremely thin resume to a Usenet group in 1989. Someone at the Santa Cruz Operation spotted it and got in touch.
