I wish #snac had an NNTP or mail interface so I can use fedi from my Emacs Gnus just like I use #Usenet; with adaptive scoring and good threading ergonomics. Maybe I should build it myself at some point. I wonder if transforming snac's JSON files to news spool files is enough to have some kind of reading support. Posting will probably be a bit more involved.

Please don’t be shocked, but I’ve been reading old #UNIX Review magazines on Archive.org, as one does. I’ve been finding a number of interesting artifacts throughout. This June 1984 ad by Cadmus Computer Systems listed a #USENET address: !wivax!cadmus.
This is a UUCP bang path, for the kids who don’t know. The ! separates relay hops, it’s a literal routing instruction. Get to the backbone, reach wivax, forward to cadmus.
No DNS.
Machines screamed at each other to swap data.

Good lord, Usenet still exists?!? https://newsgrouper.org/tops
@timbray That's my site. Yes, Usenet is "not dead yet" - https://tenor.com/en-GB/view/alive-dead-im-not-dead-yet-gif-13642579 . These days most of the traffic is for "dodgy downloads" - binary files of problematic provenance. But a few dinosaurs like me cling on to it as another text communication medium that's not under the control of crackpot billionaires or rapacious corporations. For my preferred programming language the primary forum is still https://newsgrouper.org/comp.lang.tcl .

blog post: death's inheritance and the future of tomo
today, tomo appears to be the only fork of the RSLight nntp server that is still alive. so what now?
i'll be honest: once Thom/Retro Guy died, i was very tempted to trash the project and move on. I have a half dozen other neglected development projects and books and a podcast to devote my research time to.
and then I thought about Thom and the thousands of hours of his life that he put into his final project before he passed away. his dedication was infectious. and in 2026, we need decentralized forum software more than ever.
that being said, I sure as hell don't want to be responsible for taking over someone else's open source project. that's almost as bad as adopting their kid. hard pass.

Usenet dà ancora segnali di vita.
Attualmente sto frequentando:

@toomanysecrets My fondest memory of #VMS is of EVE, the "extensible #VAX editor", a sort of easter egg which could be activated by invoking the editor command as "edit/tpu" instead of simply "edit." It came with its own scripting language, that included functions that would copy a rectangular grid of characters to different "coordinates." It was fun. I had some of the prettiest quoted text blocks on #Usenet with that editor.
I also really loved the online documentation. Much more plain-English and much more complete (encyclopedic, really) than UNIX man pages of the same era.
:chef's kiss:
I know there are big archives of historical Usenet posts online. Are there similar Echonet archives from Fidonet?

#Question How would you reimagining, reinventing email & usenet in 2025?
An open, terminal native, low-resource, slow pace, textual/unicode, store & forward, self-configuring, delay & disruption tolerant, inherently private & secure, spam-free, peer-to-peer, trivial to self-host, with self-generated self-owned addresses (eg: ssh public keys) which you can take with you from system to system?
#NomadicIdentities #SelfHosting #StoreAndForward #DelayAndDisruptionTolerant
#EMail #UseNet #ReImagined
@minsoochoo But I do miss good old #Usenet though.
My #USENET news provider (http://individual.net) is shutting down services in two years (2027-09-30). Any alternatives?
I know net news is pretty much dead already, but hope dies a slow and painful death.
The situation with #Guppe wouldn't happen if it was really decentralized aka #p2p fault tolerant tech. Like #Namecoin , .ens IPNS #IPFS, or #nostr #pubky #ZeroNet
@dandylover1
ipns://seedit.eth plebbit.com hashchan.org are interesting.
Meanwhile #Friendica & #Hubzilla have some groups too.
also shout out to @newsmast , they host few communities, check them out.
I've tried fedigroups.social & it's hard to use, unintutive & obscure. I see just a mastodon server there. It is not clear & obvsious from main home page how to list groups, posts inside groups, group members.
With such trend no wonder why people look back to #Usenet. However I think #XMPP is more usable (it does have groups and proto social network inside too)
