Well, jailbreak applied. Can't get SSH working on it yet (because it is late and I am tired).

But it is old enough that the DRM can easily be stripped off any legitimately purchased books.

So, for the few authors who insist on *only* releasing on Kindle, I can now read on my other devices.

Not bad for a night's fiddling.

@Edent I finally jailbroke my Kindle toward the end of last year, installed KOreader, and have been enjoying the ePub compatibility and the greatly improved PDF handling. I should have done it sooner.

@Edent I bought one recently to use as a passive display for #HomeAssistant but I reached the same stage as you, jailbroken but nothing more.

I'll get there in the end!

Oh! And this #Kindle is so old it doesn't support 2FA.

The officially supported way to log in is:

Type email address.
Type password.
Hit submit.
Wait for an error message.
Type password123456

Yup, literally append your TOTP code to the end of the password.

If it's stupid but it works… Well, it is *still* stupid. But let's not quibble.

I don't think there's a way to make the old Kindle browser full screen, nor can it support modern https, doubt it runs JS.

But it does support displaying PNG and http-equiv=”refresh".

So it can live quite happily as a passive display, regularly fetching new server-generated content.

@Edent ooh interesting. I have an old kindle lying around, can you turn off the auto power off and have it as a permanent display?

@Edent I’ve been tempted to do something similar but flashing with th TRNML software. Glad to see this working. https://usetrmnl.com/guides/turn-your-amazon-kindle-into-a-trmnl

TRMNL

Clarity, at a glance.

@awfulwoman I had a play with TRMNL last year and was a bit unconvinced by it.

But, anyway, this Kindle is too old to run anything like that.

@Edent I recently got a PocketBook Verse, which has a microSD slot, no ads and works just fine with DRM-stripped ebooks and PDFs. Only to realize I actually prefer LCDs and OLEDs to e-ink.

@Moray I don't know yet.
I use KOReader on my Android eReaders.
This will probably become a passive display screen.
