"No, see, you don't understand, Linux will never catch on, it's just not as intuitive as Windows!"

Meanwhile Windows:

OneDrive, Microsoft's built-in cloud storage platform, is deeply embedded in Windows and positioned as a central part of the company's cloud ecosystem. When Windows updates or fresh...

@rysiek i was talked into dualbooting #linux a decade ago by my then 11-yo student.

an 11-yo. running #ubuntu and #libreoffice like nobody's business. a decade ago.

i guess he was too busy doing the homework i gave him to notice #foss is "unintuitive".

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@rysiek It took me four days of hard work to figure out how to get my files off OneDrive and back on my computer. Even argued with our university IT guy because he wasn't able to explain how OneDrive works.

OneDrive would be something I'd use if it didn't thwart me from doing basic things like delete files from just One Drive. I don't keep master copies of anything on my Windows partition, but somehow I'm still too frustrated to use OneDrive on purpose.

OneDrive syncing of SharePoint is a game of roulette. I’m constantly having to search old disorganized folders to find files I know I previously copied to the new folders. Pack rats are my salvation.

@rysiek They just need to rename Linux to "not OneDrive" and the desktop wars are over.

I didn't see why the hate until my new job made me use a system with it. It really, really sucks. It's like the worst DMS but you haven't consciously decided to use a DMS.

@rysiek

Everything is now equally shit. MacOS has limited options and a lot of software doesn't like the M series processors it is now tied to.

Windows 'just works' for a lot of things, but it's like arranging Duplo blocks and the interface is now just a coke and fentanyl dream. It's also a hacker's sandbox.

Linux Desktop ... is just one huge mess. I fervently hope the EU cracking down will FORCE survivors and consistency. No more XFCE caveats, and KDE random decisions.

The PCs come with Windows.

It's not about Linux. People will only switch if MS makes Windows totally unuseable.

But businesses are being hostage by about a dozen companies that only write Windows Software, and often in the last 30 years have done it badly.

They also come with Ubuntu and a bunch of other distros. Here's Dell laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled:

Sounds to me like Windows is totally unusable:

But the pre-installed with Linux are not in retail shops and are often overpriced. They are buried deep on Del & Lenovo sites.
Dell has been selling PCs with Linux for over 30 years, but quietly.
Lenovo sells with Windows, Linux or "Empty". Sometimes the "empty" is cheaper.
Installing Linux is easy and always was. Creating a bootable USB stick from a download is a little trickier on Windows than on Linux, but those with Linux are easier to make and use than a Windows USB boot!

@rysiek I had the foresight to cancel my 365 subscription before all the #alslop happened. OneDrive stopped working on arm Win11, so I had no reason to keep it when other providers like Proton or Google work much much better.

Dodged a bullet with that one.

@rysiek I get, from a corporate perspective, why this is a good idea for businesses who want to scan and control documents centrally instead of trusting their employees (I'll save the corporate rant for later), but making this default on user machines by signing you up to Microsoft's corporate plan is user hostile

@rysiek There's a second problem with OneDrive: if yo use Office and enable AutoSave, your file is automatically saved to OneDrive – while the old version is kept wherever you had it. I know of at least one case where this resulted in an unfinished file being submitted, because there was no indication that the file that was being worked on was only saved to OneDrive.

@rysiek And ads are intuitive there as well. No need for a TV or Instagram, on Windows you get your ads directly into the Start Menu.
