I wish there was a mobile device
designed for children that for safety:

  • Didn't collect any personal data at all
  • Didn't use any AI features
  • Didn't use geolocation
  • Didn't allow downloading any intrusive or malicious apps

I would buy that for myself.

@Em0nM4stodon @cmthiede

I wish smartphones had an elder mode, that brought phone like services first and foremost to the close screen, Home Screen, had picture buttons from frequent contacts and only surfaced apps or services the user could understand, without hunting.

It would genuinely sell more phones.

I see many people took this as a request for recommendations, and this is great for others who are looking, but what I mean here is tech shouldn't collect any data on children.

If we are going to use the argument that we are trying to protect the children (Chat Control, Age Verification, etc), then we should see governments being enraged at how corporations collect data on children (and their parents).

If this excuse was true, governments wouldn't be trying to collect even more data on children, and everyone else, as a supposedly solution.

I find it appalling that anyone could buy this as an excuse to accept more surveillance.

This is the opposite of what we need to do to protect the children (and the adults).

@Em0nM4stodon *slaps an A6 spiral-bound notebook on the table* Here you go! First one's free! ;-)

And as a side benefit, the out-of-the-box experience is *great*! :-)

@Em0nM4stodon I gave my kids my old Game Boy Advance and my brother's DSi, they tick all the boxes though probably don't do what you had in mind.

@Em0nM4stodon old Nokia flip phone? Those models that came out just before true "smartphone age". They have enough internal programs to help but not enought to bother your day.

@Em0nM4stodon GrapheneOS properly set up 💡 ✅
It is possible to set up #GrapheneOS so that a separate user account has no administrative rights and cannot install apps, making it relatively child-safe.

You can use network-level DNS filtering (e.g., NextDNS, AdGuard Home with parental blocklists) to help prevent access to inappropriate content. For example #Mullvad https://mullvad.net/en/help/dns-over-https-and-dns-over-tls "all.dns.mullvad.net"

+ Newpipe. And enabled parental controll features in Newpipe.

Mullvad VPN

DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS
