The lack of self-awareness (not to mention humility!), it burns … https://furry.engineer/@patcharcana/115401040338306964

Canadians have been going on about #PeteHoekstra for some time, now, and that's not the only offensive and propagandist thing that xe has said.

The one commentator I saw a month ago who explicitly called out Hoekstra's false conflation of #MeToo and #ElbowsUp was the same one who has pointed out that every time that Hoekstra opens xyr mouth a fresh impetus is given to the #BoycottUSA movement.

Filing "elbows up" and "me too" as the same kind of thing is such a telltale bug. The underlings don't know their place!

@cstross

The US ambassador to Germany during the first Trump Administration was an utter shitshow.

I haven't heard anything about the current ambassador yet, but no doubt he is a horrible person, too. I mean, how could he be otherwise?

@juergen_hubert Other countries send ambassadors who are career civil servants from the diplomatic service, usually with decades of experience before they get the job. The USA sends crass rich cronies of the POTUS, as a grace-and-favour appointment.

@cstross

And until now this has worked well enough, for what are other countries going to do - _not_ cater to the American hegemon?

Now that the American hegemony is crumbling, this might not be the case for much longer.

@juergen_hubert Empires seem permanent and eternal until they fall. Then the fall comes hard and fast. I expect the next POTUS will have cause to bitterly regret Trump/Vance/Project 2025's downsizing of the State Department.

Oh, there will be _lots_ of regrets all around.

@cstross He' just talking to his base, and to anyone else stupid enough to take one of Mr Trump's ambassadors seriously.
