Coming soon: Microsoft calls it auto-save to the cloud, which might sound convenient for Word users. Just be aware of what's in it for them -- feeding their "AI" database, among other things -- and think about potential consequences. https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft365insiderblog/save-new-files-automatically-to-the-cloud-in-word-for-windows/4445216

As with recall, saving screen shots of web sites, this is another example of where Microsoft pose a serious safeguarding and privacy risk to children and young people.

If documents are saved to the cloud by default, this can have implications for owprivacy, confidentiality etc esp where information is legally required to be stored securely. If I understand things, a court case can fail due to the smallest thing. By failing it is the difference between gulity or not guilty based on the episodes.

You only need to look at the UK MOD,the Afghan refugees and the information 'leaked' where doing so can have serious consequences, if the taliban gain access they will target any people still in the country OR target their families still in the country and the way the taliban deal with them is hardly humane in some cases.

How long will it be before this information falls in to the wrong hands (or ai model) and ends up causing serious or deadly consequences.?

@dangillmor how is that a good idea?
Using articles and literature as training materials sets one standard of language, but unless you need a "write this as a failing 11-year-old", this seems pointless.

@dangillmor Given that Microsoft recently announced that they regard themselves as primarily subject to US jurisdiction, and that they will share information with the US government even in the presence of foreign laws prohibiting such sharing, I'm wondering how anyone can stop them.

Use #libreoffice on #Linux

It just does what you tell it. No cloud needed.

@dangillmor This is a bit of a beat-up. I adjusted my settings to turn off autosave when this was first introduced.

@dangillmor I am glad we use LibreOffice at home. I will let work tell MS "hell no" for that option.

@dangillmor I warmly recommend @libreoffice instead of #MicrosoftOffice. I use it as a professional writer for years - and it's much better than MS (there are other alternatives, too). At the moment, I plan the change to #Linux as OS.
It feels so good that a world without Microsoft is possible!

@dangillmor I don't think there's a shred of evidence to support the assertion that files saved to Onedrive accounts are automatically used to train Microsoft AIs. For Enterprise users (at least in the UK) they specifically state that they do NOT use any such data. And I personally saw the CEO and other senior MS execs state that at a public event held in London.

@dangillmor "Word for Windows" what does that include? Is this some special installation of Word or does this apply to all Versions of Word since 2013?

@dangillmor Nice! it is more easy to set up automation with poisoned word texts (for me) than running a fake blog or fake websites with gibberish words.

Jeez… they must be desperate. 😐 No one wants to feed Microsoft’s “AI” database voluntarily:

Think of the potential legal consequences. Lawyers and CPAs regularly engage in written communications to their clients concerning proprietary tax matters (i.e., highly confidential). With Word & Excel documents uploaded to MS's servers, the information is no longer secure.

I'd like to think both CPA & law firms have the technical experience to prevent this uploading (if it can be prevented), but the smaller the firm, the less likely this is true.

I guess people like JK Rowlings wouldn't be very happy if parts of their new books emerged on the Internet before the book is printed (and monetized).
