Microsoft betrays the naive developers who trusted its word:

@dangillmor

This is not the first time #microsoft fucked the entire planet.
#skype originally was true peer to peer communication system.

The US government wanted it dead, as it complicated intercepts enormously and it offered Microsoft something like 3.5billion dollars (of people's money) to buy it and break it.
I once went into an archival dig, and thanks to the ephemeral nature of the internet, there were only fragments of that hi/story preserved...

Soon after purchase, Microsoft broke Skype by making central servers...

...and as we now know, Skype is dead.

#history #infrastucture #surveillance

@dangillmor Fortunately this is easy to fix. Codeberg and other alternative systems exist. The true fix will be decentralized. Open source existed before GitHub it will exist beyond this current crisis.

@dangillmor I mean, nobody - nobody - believed Microsoft would leave GitHub alone forever. From the moment it was acquired, it was living on borrowed time

@dangillmor An interesting article - on Microsoft LinkedIn :)

Git as a source control technology is inherently distributed, the error was to treat GitHub as a central hub for everyone. There are some others like GitLab as well, but hopefully people switch to setting up their own repo «islands».
