How big is the open social web, the #fediverse, #bluesky etc compared to the big commercial platforms? It's a bit sobering.

From my recent talk "From millions to billions -- a plausible narrative for how to grow the open social web."

@j12t Interesting way to present it. Still, in the long term, all these corporate platforms will come and go. The fediverse will be here forever. It can only grow 🙂

Seem to spent half my life persuading people not to use FB - its algorithmic tentacles run so deep.

@j12t I keep thinking about the math you have, Johannes, and the fact that we don’t really have an apples-to-apples object to measure here. How many of the “billions” in the monoverses are bots, duplicates, brands, corporations, phantoms? Abandoned logins?

The open social network, as others observed at FediCon, could be so many things.

@johannab The Meta numbers are "Family daily active users" which I understand are daily active counting the user only once across the Meta empire. So it should not include abandoned accounts. Also not counting things like FaceBook pages as separate users.

Re Fediverse users, I have far more distinct fediverse accounts than I have commercial platform accounts, one per server etc.

Of course the numbers are just approximations, but my real point is the order of magnitude, and that's correct IMHO.

@j12t True, true.

I'm really just .. intrigued but also frustrated by not really seeing meaningful measures of "connection" to compare. And also the closed systems of FB, Xitter, etc are not exactly either-or, nor 1:1. Most of us have some sort of account in a walled garden, or 10. We're *also* out here federating.

I'm being weird tonight, admittedly, sorry! 😆 I DO appreciate all the work everyone is doing for us.

@j12t

Also having a moment where I'm feeling "growth" matters less than "sustainability", but I cannot better qualify or quantify either of those things in my head right now.
