@zkat As a privacy tool can't it be used for good? like here and countless other cases monero could be used to defy oppressors that want to control what we buy or who we associate with. Investing in crypto and using crypto to buy things are two different things I would never treat crypto as an investment bc the ppl who lose most from that are the most desparate and vulnerable; ofc theres pointless projects tied 2 new coins that exist just 2 pump & dump scam ppl but thats not this.

@zkat U could create a system 2 make it easier 4 creators 2 accept #Monero (XMR) a truly private cryptocurrency, #bitcoin & #ethereum r talked about by the media as if theyre private but theyre actually pseudonymous, if u have the persons address u have their entire transaction history, but not with monero. Using it there would be no higher authority (except the state) that could enforce regulations on ur sales, & even then it would have to b serious surveillance bc the network itself is opaque
@ambiguous_yelp I'm personally not going to touch cryptocurrency stuff with a 10-foot pole.
The thing we're working on would allow for cryptocurrency-accepting creators to exist in the ecosystem freely, but I don't plan on writing the software that allows that to happen, or helping anyone do it either.

@zkat also the mining algorithm for #monero (XMR) isn't easily parallelizable so its not profitable to buy up data centres worth of gpus to mine it. The mining process focuses on single cpu cores, also the coins have fungibility meaning that theres no such thing as dirty money like there is with #bitcoin every xmr coin is identical with no history

Which is why virus authors often specifically deploy monero miners on their victims' systems. If more services accept monero, the incentives for ransomware and stealth miners increase significantly.
I think there are better solutions to the social problem of payment processors letting themselves be bullied by christofascists
@OliverUv Id rather deal with viruses than censors viruses have technical solutions. Besides what else is there to stop them short of a global communist revolution

@zkat can you explain briefly what you will do that doesn't rely on these payment processors? why hasn't an existing platform already done this?
@aetataureate There exist payment processors that process "high-risk" or adult content. They have their own relationships with visa/mastercard. They just tend to charge significantly more in fees.
When you have a centralized site, payment processors judge you by the content across the site. That is, if you have ANY NSFW on your site, you end up having to use a nsfw processor for ALL of your content, which is kind of a non-starter for sfw creators.
By decentralizing payments such that only individual, tiny sites hook up with nsfw payment processors, and by further making it so each of those individual sites has THEIR OWN relationship with a payment processor, you make it so instead of taking down a whole platform, the best an organization like those Australian TERFs can do is play whack-a-mole with a bunch of tiny sites, and make individual requests to a number of different payment processors related to a bunch of different accounts... and no one else is affected in the process.
@zkat oh, so it's kind of a shelter system for SFW creators, not something that is reaching out for the specific content targeted at itchio. i will just say that's a wild thing to claim is "resistant to censorship" and sell this way to anyone. that's . . . very very dishonest.
