The Netherlands forced Meta to let users ditch algorithmic feeds — and it actually happened.
A Dutch court ruled that Facebook & Instagram must offer a chronological, non-algorithmic feed option. The result? Users can finally choose to see posts in order, not by engagement bait.
A big deal for #DigitalRights, #PlatformRegulation, and anyone tired of the #Algorithm deciding what they see.

This is interesting.
Last week's meltdown of the UK's National Air Traffic Services caused the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights. The blame is being laid on a single military aircraft entering “spurious” flight data into the system.
"A flight plan submitted by a UK military aircraft caused a meltdown in air traffic control systems used by Nats which remained unfixed for several hours."
WTF?
There was no backup because backing up the amount of data involved was apparently too costly. (Ahem!)

When the going gets rough I embroider something.
Anything will do.
The repetitive stitching is therapeutic for me.
After my son passed away I sewed and sewed. I ended up with stacks of towels. I gave them all away.
Now I find that the sewing brings renewed purpose. These simple towels have become an opportunity. A small kindness to pass onto someone who might benefit from such a gesture. Hopefully they bring a smile to the recipients. That's all I want.
Mastodon has opened that avenue for me to channel my hobby into something slightly more. Selling them would spoil the fun somehow. I truly enjoy posting a small package to a faraway place that houses a stranger who isn't really that.
A tangible way to say thank you for being a friend.

@jpm I dont think I have ever tombstones a part larger than 0402.
At home I've tombstoned 0402 infrequently, 0201 I don't use much but have probably tombstoned a handful.
And I once tombstoned a 2x2 ball WCLSP.

today i had a migraine for the second ever time in my life (first one was in 2009). full “blind spot which was getting content-aware-filled so the word to the left of the one I was looking at kept vanishing, gradually rippling outward like a cracked mirror into a murmuration of zigzag stained glass fractals around one side of my visual field”. after being freaked out, then realizing what it was, i was finding it kinda entertaining until i realized i needed to get to a dark room and lay down asap
@jk I used to get those migrating blind spots my mine would just turn into weird transparent static, but zero other symptoms, maybe once a year or so. Then I had minor brain surgery and got a bunch while recovering and never again after???

I hear you, but I’ve started to wonder about what things are wrong intrinsically in digital tech, or at least that are hard to fight.
With a desktop computer that’s supposed to help you with everyday things, you’ve got to have an OS and software. I think that naturally leads to vendor lock in, but not just for replacement parts as it would be with a car but your personal information and artefacts.
I suspect it’s in the nature of building up a software stack that’s user friendly enough for mass consumption: there are just too many choices the developers need to make, and too many layers, and so too many opportunities a company has to make their software incompatible with someone else’s.
I suspect with desktop computing every day mental work was colonised by monopolies and monopolistic structures. Which then sent us down a problematic path which may very well strongly resemble cyber punk dystopias.
That big social media and then this AI surrender followed, is to me, not a coincidence at all.
There’s something funny about software that betrays its promise, a dangerous magic if you will.
