@TheBreadmonkey bastards stole my cheese pasty from my hand in Llandudno
@don The thing is, we’re already paying for not having it. Developing software like this doesn’t cost more, it just doesn’t work so well for proprietary software distribution models. The amount of F/OSS developer effort put into producing poor clones of Microsoft products is more than the effort required to build something that’s a joy to use.
@david_chisnall
ISTR that the original Mac developers guide said that there should be an "undo" available for every action... when did that disappear?
@don
I hesitate to say this bluntly, because I know a whole lot of folks on here are actively involved in technical development of one sort or another, and derive both pleasure and a significant part of their identity from that fact. There’s something I think we all need to get clear on, though, and it’s something I myself had to learn the hard way: no tool will liberate us. The achievement of justice cannot be automated, or otherwise outsourced to a technical apparatus of any sort.
You work on tools because that’s what you’re good at, because that’s the way your brain works, because that’s what you enjoy or can get compensated for doing. That’s all as may be. But please, please do not make the mistake of thinking that the tool – any tool, of any sort whatever – will produce “progress.” There is and can be no technical fix for the social-psychological, existential or ontological predicaments that confront us. In the end there is only us, staring back at us from whatever mirror we’ve built.
(“I don’t know who needs to hear this,” etc., and at that I strongly suspect the people who most do will struggle to take the thought on board. Selah.)
J’ai tenu compte des conseils reçus
C’est mieux du coup ? 😊😅
Having a family is basically just explicitly telling people the thing you're most frightened of in the world then them making you do it because they can't be arsed to get a 13 minute train. 👍
In entirely unrelated news, seems like I have to do another midnight Gatwick Airport run again tonight. Good job last time wasn't one of the most traumatic experiences of my entire life.
the nurse told me to measure my blood pressure every morning, keep doing the uh eating right and exercising thing* until i get a consistent 140/90 or less. i have been doing so.
the tester is some cheap thing off amazon, doctors are fine with this one weird trick cos they use basically the same one
right arm i typically score ~150/90, left arm i'm getting ~135/85
i am doubting i have notably higher blood pressure in my right arm than my left
i'm beginning to think in practical terms this number is +/-10mmHg
* 30 min walk every day is annoyingly effective in making me feel generally better
@davidgerard I bought one of the cheap wrist-mounted blood pressure meters from Lidl a year or so ago. It worked a few times, then I put it aside, and when I tried again, it started failing with an error code. I ended up picking up a proper cuff-based one (a Beurer, about €40).

@tshirtman @davidsnug c'est fort possible, en effet.

What if the rules meant to stop AI scraping also stopped us from saving the web?
The future of the open web is being debated this week in a conference room in London.

@internetarchive It’s so simple to scrape websites without abusing them, slowly and using the solution they provide for this operation.
As an example, ListenBrainz provides a file with all the website content for it to be downloaded and stored, but AI scrapers skip past that and keep scraping the website page-per-page, which slows the website down like a DDOS attack (as it happens periodically) and is part of the cause for ListenBrainz’s recent issues.
