Operating system uptimes are like avocados: a week is about as long as you should trust one.
@Migueldeicaza what ? I have multi-year uptime on my servers and I’m not trying hard. Desktops can go to a month routinely, as long as they’re using gnome.

The only question for the left is, are we going to embrace Opportunity as potential allies in changing the government? Even while we can't be completely sure that they will?
Or are we going to follow CLuxon's example, and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by smearing them as agents for the other lot? Even though its pretty gross to see leftists lie in public about other groups to promote their own. See;

"As a leftist forced to coexist with other leftists, I have seen my share of absurd opinions, but 'Opportunity are ACT in disguise!' is about as nonsensical as Kiwi political opinions get, on a par with 'National will balance the books!' and 'Winston will keep them honest!' As a semi-professional ACT party despiser; please take it from me: Opportunity are nothing like ACT."

Amazing to see this file format make it to the web after Chrome devs initially shot it down. JPEG XL aka JXL offers smaller file sizes / higher image quality vs JPEG and other formats, plus it supports HDR photos, lossless compression options, and more. Info here: https://jpegxl.info/
@NanoRaptor
I feel like there needs to be a background image on the device showing text with "number of IT 'Professionals' that have attempted to upgrade this Tool to SP3 and broken it"
With a line of silhouettes for the times its has happened...
And then number of hours wasted too...
@thomasdorr Oh I *like* that so very very much.
@Guillotine_Jones But I thought we were friends 😭💔
@farah
Well, then, can you keep a secret?
Now what was the question again!
@timberwraith
Hi. Are you talking about this one?
(on the archive.org website)
It has indeed been removed between July 26th and August 1st.
What a mess :(
@benjamin I don't remember? The link I saved a while back is no longer accessible.
This is, quite possibly, the most entertaining interview i have ever encountered. You simply *must * read it. It keeps getting better with every question.

U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed after last-minute pressure from U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, leaving President Donald Trump to impose new tariffs and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowing retaliation. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/08/25/world/lutnick-intervention-canada-talks/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #jamiesongreer #howardlutnick #canada #markcarney #us #donaldtrump #republicans #trade #tariffs
@barenaturale thanks!
Hey about your post RE: not every day is a beach day, anytime nude is possible indoors, I like to think of it as a win 🏖️
“Not every day has to be a beach day. I’m reminding myself that appreciating the nudist lifestyle isn’t limited to the moments when I can fully enjoy it outdoors ✌️ 🌿”
@Crissy I’m with you on that. The beach is nice, but it’s not the only place to enjoy it 🌿

As a practical matter, it's unlikely that the vote-by-mail restrictions will have significant practical effect on the 2026 midterms, even the Court ultimately allows them (which it is not at all clear they will). It's just too close to the election at this point.
@mattblaze They've succeeded in generating a little extra chaos and uncertainty, which is the real point. The fact that SCOTUS failed to put the kibosh on this immediately is a Trump victory by itself.
Same with: they don't need to actually deploy ICE to polling places, they just need people to think it might happen, in order to change voting behavior.
You don't need me to tell you this but it needs to be said: Elections are won or lost in the margins.
you fucked around the whole summer, didn't you? and now it's fin d'août

A Translate Science book club?
We're considering creating a Translate Science book club. The idea would be to choose a popular science book and invite one or more *translators* of the book to join us online for a book club style discussion, including their insights from translating scientific content in the book.
We're thinking books like Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, or something by Ed Yong or Mary Roach.
First, what do you, our Translate Science community, think of this idea?
Second, if it appeals to you, what books would you suggest?
Third, maybe some of you translate popular science books! Or maybe you know people who do. If you do, we'd love to hear from you and will keep you in mind if the book club materializes.
@20002ist So annoying.
@mattblaze I did a similar split talk at Black Hat around the same time with someone else who violently disagreed (and still disagrees) with me but respected the time allotments. I bear her no ill will and like to think we’re still friends because it’s a rough-and-tumble world and people are entitled to have strongly felt opinions.*
*Per Karl Popper, I exclude people whose opinions favor beating up and kidnapping random POC, demonizing LGTBQ people for having the temerity to exist, &c.

In a 2022 interview, Cerimedo displayed his arrogance while proclaiming that he wanted to be the “Magneto of the right” and detailed how his misinformation media campaigns work. Those campaigns created lasting damage, not unlike what we’ve seen in the United States and what other countries around the world are experiencing."

Google's brilliant "lay off all the senior people with taste and experience" plan is going swimmingly.
@slightlyoff It is clearly a top down view of a duck's head.
