mas.to is good for a large instance. the admin keeps out of the spotlight which keeps things nicely low-drama, but seems to quietly do the right thing most of the time
the moderation isn’t as focused as it is on a small instance of course, so it’s worth looking into a few of those too I think. but mas.to has been nice and consistent for me so far.

I am apparently NOT allowed under ANY circumstances to buy a drinks globe despite always wanting one.
@TheBreadmonkey Potential loophole: how dated is the cartography? If this globe shows, for example, East & West Germany, then you can explain that you are purchasing it to preserve historical data. The fact that it is, indeed a _drinks_ globe is merely secondary and barely factors into this most rational purchase.

@tante very much agree with your angle on what society should consider (un)acceptable. I too keep pointing out that smartphones contain a substantial amount of child labor and wtf are we doing here. Related, guess I should be grateful for the "hey I bought this cheap thing on AliExpress" callout - guilty as charged; I wonder if you can recommend any research tools to figure out what to avoid/how to reduce negative impact? I remember the Buycott app but that was for supermarkets & mainly USA...

As I recall, the main difference was more FPU pipelines (one per core rather than a shared one?). It looked like a fairly minor tweak.

I'm always scared to put my wide(er)-angle lens on my camera instead of the long lens that lives on it, because what if a great bird lands RIGHT in front of me and I don't have the right lens to get the shot?? Just the worst FOMO. But since I'm going to be on top of a mountain on my trip I feel like I've kind of got to bring my 25mm lens too, I want some landscape shots, and I'll just have to accept that nothing is predictable and a boreal chickadee could show up when I had the wrong lens on, and I'd just have to cope with that. 🥲
You should own your home router. I don't care what they *say* they're doing. It's possible to do it... which means the company may eventually do it to make more money or a malicious third party will enable it.

@dlakelan the problem statement of "find the next queen" or "place N queens" is a bit of a misnomer imho. the n queens problem is raised at the beginning of this piece https://circumstances.run/@hipsterelectron/117150973526587015 but it's at the end where he makes clear that he is invoking "nondeterministic" as in "nondeterministic finite automaton". that's why i was frustrated about him mentioning inferences of path-dependent state changes elsewhere as if that was only a property of the "semantics" of a type system, because i think he's talking about something much more specific in this one
