trying to talk to aliens? bring a baby book
@anders_von_hadern Sex sells, I guess 😬 @Natasha_Jay
@mekkaokereke absolutely. And replace Asians looks like nerds with Asians look like criminals. So many times I’ve been given the benefit of the doubt that I would be good at math and .. actually I’m really bad at math..
The model minority myth hurts everyone.
During the pandemic, I worked to help Asian American businesses in San Francisco deal with the slowdown, to help their employees. The demographic with the longest unemployment during the pandemic, was not Black people. It was Asian Americans.🤷🏿♂️
Because restaurants and bars shut down. And in the city of San Francisco, that has had a significant Chinese American population since the 1800s, and is today 37% Asian, a disproportionate number of food service workers are Asian American. So pandemic slowdowns and associated layoffs in the service sector, hit them hard.
Rough number estimates: for every 2 Asian people in the Bay Area working in tech, there is 1 making delicious Ramen, Yakitori, or serving Negronis or milk tea boba, or busing tables or working an egg line. When the 2 tech workers started working from home or working remotely from another city, the 1 service worker got laid off.
No one cared enough about these service workers, because with a few Jensen Huang's to skew the average, people believe that "Asians are rich!🤡" And "startup owners are rich!🤡" and so most pandemic help was focused on Black and Hispanic populations.

A photo I took of my baby. For 15 years I always had this little face just.. staring at me. She was a little baby.
@chrisward.de@bsky.brid.gy I can’t see anything ending farage’s career in politics other than a loss to count binface
love to see @dholms.at@bsky.brid.gy explaining @anisota.net@bsky.brid.gy rn
i knew i would have to learn a lot of new stuff to learn accordion but i was just practicing "knowing how much impedance this box of wind has when it goes from sucking to blowing so that i can move my arm fast enough but not too fast to make the air stay the same when my arm gets too far away and i need to switch directions" and that is not a very intuitive feeling for me yet
@jonny nice. What kind of accordion are you learning?
@rolle tämä on kyllä erinomainen kehitys. Tykästyin melko vahvasti heti alussa, mutta jatkuvuus tuli heti mieleen. Jäseneksi kun vaan voin.
ok this is so cool. this LED manufacturer designed maybe the coolest demo brochure possible for their COB LEDs, its a ringed binder where each of the pages is a PCB that you plug in and can control via touch to toggle which strips are on 😲

We call this "raising the floor" -- we're not trying to make the *best* version of a thing, we're trying to make the *free, public version* of a thing better. Which has distributional effects.
In our case the thing is energy data and we're motivated by the belief that this data should be a public good. But ya know, there's other impacts too.
Heard this crazy story of American "justice" on the Criminal podcast.
A man is arrested for a crime cos the police used AI facial recognition. The man has a solid alibi: he was in hospital cos his child was being born.
6 months later, he pleads guilty. Why? He's been locked up all this time, awaiting trial. The only way he gets to go home to his new baby is to admit to a crime he didn't commit.
This is that craziness @mekkaokereke keeps telling us about.

Yooooooo D.Webb at DWeb 🤪🤩🤯😍😱😲😯😮
Nothing is certain. The apps you love can be removed by developers or app stores at any time. The music you enjoy can disappear from streaming platforms, since you only rent access while you listen. The selection of shows and movies you stream can change anytime. Social media platforms rise and fall every decade, and when monetization fails, companies collapse. This is the reality of the world today.
But it doesn't have to be that way. We can still choose to buy CDs, vinyls, cassettes, and movies. Games are the tricky part since you can't buy new games offline any more, but retro games still exist. Open source can last forever, as long as we keep backups or host our own repositories. We can build our own tools, run our own websites, and host our own instances. But even that doesn't guarantee longevity, because everything still relies on one thing - you. When you die or lose interest, your creations fade with you.
Ironically, I've seen countless websites and apps come and go over the past 30 years. Yet my blog is still online, just as it was when it started as an "online journal" back in 1998. I've always focused on longevity. But that's not the main point. The real point is understanding that not everything is in our control. And that is worth keeping in mind. Every single day is precious. We should touch grass sometimes.
Memento mori.
