@lina I don't fully agree here. Calling stuff "AI" if it's basically just a control loop was always kinda cringe.
@KeyJ Yes but compared to now...
Data Centers Now Consume 6% of US Electricity
"An estimated 13 percent of US cloud consumption, totaling more than 3 gigawatts, comes from so-called "zombie" workloads—abandoned test environments and unused applications that continue to draw power without doing any useful work."
compete with instagram? crazy.
open source and federated, no vc? crazier.
let you migrate your whole account out? wild.
open api so anyone can build a better app? insane.
1 million+ people say crazy works.

For those of you who manage #WordPress sites, how long do you wait before doing a major point update?
@podfeet TBH my host Rocket.net does it for me on most of my sites.

"Having good parents is just like the lottery You’re just like, “Oh my god, I won the lottery! What the -- I didn’t do anything!”"
So true, I was so worried about coming out to them, reached out to my high school bestie, and she even offered to stand beside me, despite like 10 years of distance.
She wasn't needed though, my parents and especially my mom, love me unconditionally, and the pressure they put on me, asking when I was giving them grandchildren suddenly disappeared.
Kitty!!!
@elifyalvac hope the rest helps! A comfort game can be very healing alright ✨
@meljoann thank you! ❤️👾

@mattgemmell I'd likely buy a used MacBook Air and install Asahi Fedora…
@jaredwhite I don't want to be limited by the asahi thing, as cool as it is. Boring old Intel or AMD makes more sense when I want to distro-hop and mess around.

A cartoon by Kevin Maher and Joe Dator for New Yorker Magazine.
Today I was in a sportswear shop in Denmark, where all items had two prices:
— A normal price which came with the requirement that you registered with them, so they can data mine your purchases.
— An almost 100 percent higher price which was offered to anyone who did not want to have their data mined.
I truly loathe this, but it is becoming more and more common in large retail chains in my country. Are you seeing this in your country as well?
@randahl I haven't seen anything like that (other than the loyalty cards mentioned by others), but have bookmarked the link to the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (formerly Department of Consumer Affairs) in case I do see it.
As to loyalty cards, I have them for two grocery stores near me and refuse to have any others, for reasons of data mining and excessive e-mail, texting, and long (couple-loaded) receipts.
Updated my dependency cooldown post with all the ongoing work to enable cooldown features in various ecosystems: https://nesbitt.io/2026/03/04/package-managers-need-to-cool-down.html
@andrewnez Andrew, could you maybe take a look at https://depfu.com/blog/reasonably-up-to-date and tell me if you would consider that feature, which we shipped in 2019, to be reasonably similar to cooldowns?
And maybe that warrants at least a hint in the blog post?
