the telecommunications act of 1996 was directly intended to create telecom monopolies subservient to intelligence agencies. the universal service fund is actual literal money laundering. the same act censored porn on the web and the only reason people don't know about it is because the supreme court got bullied to remove the worst parts twice (they didn't want to, sickening shit)
they succeeded the third time against libraries
I thought about chatting about the Guardian 100 best novels of all time list https://www.theguardian.com/books/ng-interactive/2026/may/12/the-100-best-novels-of-all-time, because this used to be a fun way to have conversations about books & "classics" in particular (& I very often like "classics").
But instead, I'm annoyed that it's once again so anglo-centric and I don't want to talk about books written in English.
So: tell me about books that should be on this list thay weren't originally written in English!

@vicgrinberg I challenge everyone responding to this thread to name at least two books not written by men! 🙄#readWomen

I’ve had a similar awakening a few months when realising that GitHub shows you thr cost of free-for-open-source Actions usage. On of my decidedly low-traffic but big test suite (173 checks) would cost thousands of dollars per month.
I have come to the inevitable conclusion that they’ve played us all for fools. We all have infinitely fast dev machines, but we need to rent a dev machine’s worth of servers every month to run an open source project?
Absolutely not.
@janl tho not OSS related, at work we’ve had self hosted runners for our CI for a while now because LOL @ the pricing for minutes specially for macOS or windows CI runners. Being mostly rust builds our minutes add up fast.
PSA in my tradition there's no really convo about forgiving harmdoers who have not done the work of owning harm, beginning to change, amends and serious apology (up to at least a few times, and possibly never is the harm involved trauma)
more in my most recent book, ON REPENTANCE AND REPAIR, natch

@paulrickards oh wow. I spent an entire year standing next to one of these in 1997, filing thousands of A0 drawings for a huge shopping centre in the UK (Bluewater in Kent). Given the circumstances, it was pretty damn reliable.
@paulrickards it was pretty much the last big project they worked on before going digital. So I suspect not much longer. Some clients liked a paper copy to point at and scribble on. A0 was a bit impractical, but folks looked the theatre of unfurling a big plan of their project.

@VincentTunru Where do you expect to have bad luck to make up for that?
@latenightowl I expect that my house will be inexplicably struck by a very localised earthquake, at the least.
