goblins in the shell
So I’m designing a new #GUI toolkit with #REPL built-in, heavy on #UNIX philosophy and shell integration. Inspired by ed(1), of course. But I need to stress-test this design against possible use-cases for such a GUI. What are the small GUI apps you use daily or want to have that’d benefit from a really simple custom GUI you can hack up in an hour?
So far I have:
• Disk flashing utility (I keep forgetting the commands)
• Shell
• Music player
Any other ideas?

@aartaka In addition to all the suggestions already made, let me add the meta-suggestion: all the ideas that people will come up with once they have the possibility to do lightweight GUI apps.
So whatever constraints you consider acceptable now, be prepared for people complaining about them in the near future.

“I don’t think about the Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody.”
The midterm campaign ads are writing themselves.
It's not hard to spot, is it?
Trump is NOT pro-Russian.
Trump is not even pro-American.
Trump is pro-Trump, no more, no less.
And he's a stupid, spiteful, corrupt, demented, drooling psychopath, incapable of empathy.

I guess I just need to clone myself several times in order to get all the writing done that I need to do in the next few months. Or slow down time for everyone else.
Or maybe just give up on writing anything ever again and go live in the barn with the goats.
@sundogplanets Dictation and employ someone to transcribe it for you?
High Quality chaos (a slide from a talk I do next week on this topic)
Wireshark: more than 40 CVEs in last release ...
historically, the underline/box cursor and the vertical line cursor had different meanings/usages
the vertical line cursor was an insertion cursor that indicated you were going to insert a character at the cursor position BETWEEN existing characters in the string

@beka_valentine Wondering... what "historically" means here. I know the distinction goes back to the Mac. But is it older than that? Xerox PARC maybe?
Really really historically, of course, there was no such distinction because on a VT100 terminal, there was only the blinking box cursor.
