@SteveBellovin @mattblaze The second time I taught with Canvas I built assignment points in its model. It was not worse than the model I created, and it saved me a lot of work fighting it. Maybe if I used it more I would find conditions where that’s not the case.
@adamshostack @SteveBellovin I tend to have fairly simple course structures that don't require a lot of calculation. And I don't want to have to log into something to grade things or read student work.

@mattblaze Grade recording and sometimes (though not always) homework submission are the things I did use it for before I retired. The former was very important, since circa 50 years ago I learned (the hard way…) about the probability of me making a recording mistake, and I feel it vital to let students check their own grades.
But final grade calculation? I did that via my own spreadsheet, after which I'd typically have to get into hand-to-hand combat with Canvas to make its calculations agree, to be able to take advantage of its interface to the university's course grade entry system. That generally took me hours.
For some reason, I still get school-wide faculty emails. One today said "make sure that your syllabus and readings are still available to students taking exams". That wouldn't have been a problem; ever since I started at Columbia, all of that stuff was (and is) on my web site on the open web. Partly, it's a desire for open publication (my slides are all CC-licensed), partly it's how I found it easiest to manage—and partly it's how insanely bad Canvas is. (Some years ago, the university asked for feedback on Canvas. I wrote a *long* screed documenting a few of its most awful features. They didn't listen…)

I mean I know they are NOT terrorists; but also nobody is stopping Trump from saying they are and having the FBI act like they are so I am pretty sure he's going to just keep pretending it's real and there's not a LOT of reasons he could have for doing that, that themselves do not imply real Hitler ass hours up in here. Either he intends to round you up, or cancel elections; perhaps both, in the proper order.
Last month I wrote a #poem based on my interpretation of a #writing prompt, andshared it here. Over the past few days I took in the challenge of translating it into #Spanish. I can’t stop thinking about the redistricting in TN. My cousin, who practically lived as my only brother for years after his parents passed away, died indigent in TN. I had to dig his belongings out of insects and food waste and pay for his cremation. He was 38. There were no mental support services

Our (I live in Nashville) state legislature is horrible. What they did in Memphis today is the same thing they did to Nashville a few years ago, when my district was carved up. Nashville and Memphis no longer have urban districts of their own. They’ve been split up and absorbed into the surrounding rural districts.

One of the best compliments I ever received was when demoing project for $SF_BANK early in my career. I was an Earnest Young Lad and still intimidated to be working at a bank.
This would have been 1993 probably, and I was redoing a big paper manual as a hypertext document. When I finished the demo, my boss' boss said "You guys are on drugs! This is great!"

No but I mean that's precisely the point? Of COURSE none of this will hold up in court - of COURSE posting that Trump is a TACO and Jimmy Kimmel is a fine boy doesn't make you a terrorist, and every one of those cases they actually bring will explode like a hand grenade.
That's why I'm telling you they don't intend to bring cases. That's not what this is for - if it was, it wouldn't work; they will bring cases against ninjas and activists. THIS? Is about cancelling democratic rights BROADLY.
