Harelang users, update your Hare (CVE-2026-43923)
"Runxi Yu discovered a vulnerability affecting all versions of Hare prior to 0.26.0.1 which affects programs which have the "setuid" or "setgid" bits set in their file mode. The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause these programs to misbehave by writing data intended for stdout/stderr to other open files, potentially corrupting files with garbage or manipulating the program into writing attacker-supplied data to certain files ... A survey of known open-source Hare programs found that Hare programs which ship with the setuid bit are rare. Moreover, these programs are not believed to be exploitable as a result of this issue"

I want the "where are they now" op-ed

@thesolarprincess Both. There's been a sustained disinfo campaign against batteries, AND they have improved significantly. In "conventional" battery tech, you have the rapid replacement of lithium with sodium, which is the 6th most abundant element on Earth. In the unconventional realm, you have ingenious solutions like "gravity batteries" that hoist piles of rocks up a mine shaft when the sun is shining, then lower them at night, driving a turbine.
@thesolarprincess There are enough decommissioned mine shafts - widely dispersed all over the world - to meet all the world's power storage needs several times over, AND mines already have high-voltage grid connections to drive their equipment.
@ahau you claim to be so smart and you can’t even grasp the performance gap between full precision and quantized models. You don’t see the shortage of memory and the skyrocketing of prices that is in front of you. You don’t get that 5k is worth six months of salary in many parts of the world. You delude yourself thinking that toys with 24GB vram will make you the king of the world with crappy 14B models, while people getting a MAC studio M3 will get 10x the memory for 2x the price.
@gubi Claim? I used to watch 8 hours of TV from primary to secondary school. I never finished reading a single book before going to college. I had a first class honors degree in accounting and finance. I got my PhD in economics from Johns Hopkins. I was a certified Java 2 programmer in 2001. I retired at the age of 50. I had a 3.9 GPA in a pre-vet program in 2012. I have 2 acres of land, a mini van, a 1900 sq ft house with zero debt. I don't need to work with humans. Now, show me what you have.

> Batteries are also incredibly cheap, and they're getting cheaper too.
I used to be under the impression that battery technology is the main narrow bottleneck in energy, because batteries are expensive, environmentally unfriendly, and difficult to maintain. Was I lied to, or did the technology improve much since I last looked at it?

@GrahamDowns is surviving enough?
Regarding the #snac2 activitypub server.
It seems to me that #snac2 is indeed a light and fast activitypub server, but that it's intended client is it's own web interface.
I've noted a couple of things when using external clients and @adele@social.pollux.casa of #smolfedi fame wrote a bug report that I filed as an important dev issue.
https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2/issued/608
It's starting to look like perhaps I should choose an alternative self hosted activitypub server.
@mezzodrinker yeah last month was a bit tight so I was short end of month when hetzner bill hits direct debit and payment failed, so I had to do it manually once I got paid
@ozoned@btfree.social @ozoned@tubefree.org thanks to you, it was a lot of fun!

@atomicpoet yeah, good point!
I'm having a less than fun time with body image at the moment. This comes and goes but, right now, it sucks.
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be thinner. Even when I was too thin, it wasn't quite thin enough.
And, at the moment, I am far from that.
I know that I "just" need to do more exercise and eat better, but that "just" is carrying a lot of weight in this sentence. Ironically.
No advice, thanks. I'm just venting.
@neil
I can understand that feeling.
Men indeed rarely talk about this kind of thing.
Everyone can struggle with their body image.
