First year chem is doing conversions work today, mainly mol <-> mass <-> particle ratios.
Comp sci touched their first HTML yesterday. They gave semantic structure to a recipe. The "woah" moment between seeing it typed and seeing it rendered on the page was a big one for most students. We'll do more today.
AP Chem is moving into reaction stoichiometry.

Warum die #noAfD die #Justiz in den #ostdeutschen #Bundesländern relativ leicht und nachhaltig unterwandern könnte:
Nach der #Wende wurden gleichzeitig sehr viele (westdeutsche) Bewerber*innen als #Richter*innen und Staatsanwält*innen im Osten eingestellt. Diese gehen in den kommenden Jahren in großer Zahl in den #Ruhestand. In einigen ostdeutschen Bundesländern werden das mehr als 50% der jeweiligen Berufsgruppe in den nächsten 5 Jahren sein.
Die #noAfD hat der #Unabhängigkeit der Justiz den Kampf angesagt. Das schreckt mögliche Bewerber*innen mit demokratischer, rechtsstaatlicher Überzeugung ab. In dem Klima möchten anständige Menschen eher nicht arbeiten. Dies höre ich von vielen Kolleg*innen.
Damit wird sich der #Bewerbermangel im Osten verschärfen. Das ermöglicht einem noAfD-#Justizminister, die Eingangsvoraussetzungen abzusenken und eigene Gefolgsleute in großer Zahl einzustellen. Wenn die noAfd die entsprechenden Gremien (#Richterwahlausschüsse) dominiert, wird das auch niemand kontrollieren oder gar verhindern können.
Das Ergebnis: eine im Kern zunehmend rechtsstaatsfeindliche Justiz und eine nachhaltige Schwächung des Rechtsstaats.
Das macht mir Angst.

Well there's the shoe dropped: the terms of service have always allowed openAI to use your data essentially however they please, and apparently they will in fact use it to steal your work.

Instead of letting Trump bully smaller countries one by one, we need a pact of mutual support.

Markets are tools for efficiently allocating resources, but with some very important caveats:
- They must be properly regulated to incentivise the desired outcomes. Otherwise, they are optimising for something very efficiently, but it’s not likely to be the thing you want.
- Markets do not perform well where you have information asymmetry. When ‘AI’ companies can outright lie about their products and the press unconditionally repeats those lies, you have too much information asymmetry for markets to work well.
- Markets rely on aggregate behaviour of a large number of participates making independent decisions. If wealth is too concentrated then they don’t functioning market, you have a centrally managed economy run by a handful of oligarchs.
- Free markets are not a stable state, they need constant intervention to remain free markets.
I wish more free-market fanboys in politics understood how markets actually work. They can be amazing tools but few machines work well if you remove their regulators.
@david_chisnall @SnoopJ I'm reminded of a point someone (was it @HalvarFlake ?) made about specialized vs. generalized hardware, where specialized hardware will always be more efficient to do the task, but the added overhead of getting there vs. just using whatever is general purpose and on the shelf just doesn't make it worth it.
Having a giant "do the thing inefficiently with zero preparatory overhead" can be useful if whatever it is that's required for preparation is scarce. And apparently it is, or we'd be doing the other thing

Am I expecting too much? I did after all reassemble a mac mini on my desk between reaction set-ups today. Not to say I'm any good at this stuff, but I can at least find our torx screw drivers and know to keep my screws in little containers.
Also, and perhaps a more important thing: how do I convey to students not just "here is the solution to the problem in front of us" but "here is how you want to think about these problems". Because I think knowing how to think about fixing this kind of thing does directly translate to being good at improvising stuff in experiments as necessary. Is it a matter of just explaining that they should think of it as part of their work?
