So as user, you must pay for it 💲, even if you do not want to use this OS.
This is unfair and we want to change it! Consumers should be able to buy laptops without any specific OS, and should not have to pay the license price if they don't want to.

@fsfe Slimbook in Spain sell a range of computers and Laptops with the emphasis on Linux OS. They will set you up with a dual boot to include Windows as well but you have to ask for it (and pay of course!)
I wrote something about why I think writing history and nonfiction is important. I like to think that it's useful for others or it helps them, but in truth, it does a lot for me. It grounds me emotionally, it forces me to think deeply, it stops my critical thinking from atrophying, and in its own way, it brings me into community with other people. I tried to talk about that here.
@sjvn I've listened a lot to The 60's Kinks, but didn't warm up to this one. The references to their earlier works in this one is obvious, but these riffs that sound a lot like All Day and All of the Night made me have to go and listen to that one in the middle of this song :p
@dandels They sound a lot like All Day and All of the Night because they're lifted straight from it. I find it a really interesting song, both technically and just to listen to, especially the bass line. To each their own.

To live sustainably and reduce on toilet roll, I have trained my body to need a poo before my morning shower. I skip the wiping and wash it off instead. Wife hasn't mentioned the need to buy less rolls and I'm sure she'd be disgusted. However, I'm sure the trees will thank me.

My fab friend had a hip replacement a few weeks ago so we're book clubbing our way through her recovery. A couple of weeks ago, we read Caro Claire Burke's 'Yesteryear', and this week, we've read Claire Lynch's 'A Family Matter'. We both vastly preferred the quiet beauty of the latter, and its beautiful observations of life. 'Yesteryear' was fine but it felt gimmicky to us: it felt like more a Swiftian satire than anything honest. 'A Family Matter' felt real, and very English.

Just your regular reminder that #WellsFargo is a garbage institution. Our one-branch credit union doesn't have a SWIFT number and my daughter needed one to receive the funds from her (UK) educational savings account, so she opened a Wells account. Dealing with them has been incredibly frustrating, and the manager of her branch just refused to produce a letter with her account info and wire instructions for the UK bank and slammed the phone down on me.
@pluralistic Name and shame. I'd like to know their name and office phone number so I can call and tell them behavior like that is why I'll never bank with Wells Fargo again. I don't consider it dogpiling so much as presenting an object lesson to others like them that every dog out there just might be John Wick's dog so think before acting.
@daygar Its OK, I hated GCSE Maths, and was forced into it when I went to college in 2023, failed yet again, all I can say is fuck advanced maths lol.
@alexchapman Oh I get it. I kept failing as well and eventually came out with an entry level. I just didn't get most of it. I much preferred arithmetic to algebra or geometry and stuff like that.

Anyone using a decent clampy display arm thing that they’d recommend? This would be for a portable 15in monitor that I’d like to muck about with mostly for retro stuff, including in TATE (portrait) mode.
@craiggrannell I always use ergotron. Used wall mounted and desk mounted. Both excellent. Can dig out model numbers if interested
