Do people actually like watching American football or is it like something everyone thinks you’re supposed to like and they don’t wanna admit it’s boring as fuck
@danirabbit I have the same question about cricket.

@SCampbell Oops I don’t think I’d be a good person for book recommendations. I mostly read sci-fi or horror and a little bit of fantasy 🥲
@farah Enjoy your book! It would be a boring world if we shared the same taste.
Marcel offers a rare #caturday blep.
To say this is embarrassingly amateurish would be unfair to embarrassing amateurs (like me). They could at least host the PDF on their own site, under their own domain name.
In contrast, the Greens website has their full policy platform as a set of proper webpages;
https://www.greens.org.nz/policy_complete_party
Linked from the primary policy page linked from their landing page;
https://www.greens.org.nz/policy
But that site too is shot through with dependencies on US technofascists (see screenshot for examples).

I'm using Labour and Greens as examples because I lean left, so using the Nat/ ACT/ First websites would be easy to dismiss as partisan sniping.
What I'm point ourt here is that NZ political parties - even the more progressive ones - are still not taking digital sovereignty seriously. Even with everything we've seen over the last 20 years, from Snowden, to collaboration with Orange Stalin and ICE, to the tech billionaires exposed in the Epstein Files.
This needs to change, and *fast*.

@paninid la guillotine is too quick for these bastards
We were thinking there was an hour between physical therapy and occupational therapy, which means a break for chicken fingers at the commissary. (We call days with the hour break in between “chicken finger days.”)
But there was no break. No chicken fingers. 😔
@troublewithwords I can tell you are from the Midwest. Do you drink pop with your chicken fingers? 😆
"Two cases of tuberculosis and 18 cases of COVID-19 were recently identified at a massive immigration detention center in El Paso, according to city officials and a Democratic congresswoman.
El Paso’s U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar disclosed the infections after her Friday visit to Camp East Montana, the 5,000-bed tent facility the federal government hastily built last year on the Fort Bliss Army base."

something really interesting about linguistic phenomena is that they often seem to operate on principles of equivalence that are completely contrary to how typical machine learning functions
in phonology, for instance, we form equivalence classes of sounds on the grounds of not phonetic similarity but rather contextual non-overlappingness. a kind of anti-similarity
@farah I love books like Do Not Say We Have Nothing; The Book Thief; Ridgerunner - stories well crafted & characters you fall in love with. Also like history such as Paris:1919. Not a fan of science fiction.

@decryption so nice their foray into the corporate world died off and they’ve gone back to their roots. This magnificent specimen is going on 15 years of daily use.
@jpm @decryption love my Crumpler. Mine’s also 15+ years old I reckon.
And they honour the lifetime - I have mine repaired a couple of times for free, and they’ve given me a loan bag to use while they fix mine.

Thinking about how a white woman recently told me she was specifically trying to get her Instagram algorithm to never show her anything political. And isn’t that just the whole problem summed up right there
@danirabbit yeah... I'm gonna get roasted on that one, but I think this is a bad take guilt-tripping a reasonable way to use socials and curate exposure.
Doomscrolling misery isn't a virtue. Not putting your head into the spinning amplified echo chamber doesn't mean being apolitical or not having skin in the game.
Maybe that person was uninformed and tone deaf about it, but having a feed composed exclusively of cats, makeup and pokemon fanart doesn't sound like "the problem" without context.
@keira_reckons @emmadavidson Have you read Tim Winton's novel "Juice"?
@anne_twain @keira_reckons it’s on my wish list when I finish Omar Musa’s latest novel, Fierceland, which deals with capitalism and climate change and violence

(By the way, if you listen to the podcast from this event, I asked the question about what music he listens to while he writes)

Yesterday I mentioned that my computer died. I've just decided its not worth fixing again (regretting spending on the new keyboard), & ordered a new old laptop I think I'll be happier with!
My next laptop will be easily-disassembled, & with a smaller screen than my last one Hopefully giving me better battery life & portability.
It'll be a bit of a hassle to move over with my last one not working & without a harddrive in my new one to swap out. But... SSD!
