And one night, I was sitting there with my book and my drink, reading away in the Dave & Buster's, and she came out in her coat, done for the day, and sat down at the far end of the bar and got herself a beer.
She was about four seats away from me. I was *studiously* reading my book, cuz I'm aware of how creepy guys can be.
And all of a sudden, she turns to me out of the blue, and says to me, quite loudly, "This beer tastes like ass."
And I made a new friend. :)
@GeePawHill I've decided if you can read a book in a bar then I can too. This is very exiting, because I want to try more kinds of mixed drinks (most probably only once). And try all the world's espresso martinis, and anything else coffee based. I know how to make an outstanding Irish coffee. Anything I ought to know about bar etiquette, assuming minimal prior experience?
apparently some microcontroller companies say they have "EPROM" based chips, but there's not a single erase window to be found

Somehow this reminded me of a quote from The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, about things that lots of people do, each thinking it's just a one-off unique incident and it doesn't form any kind of pattern, while the person they're each separately, individually, doing it to is having this thing happen to them *all the fucking time* and is absolutely pissed off with it. I don't know if that's at all relevant.
"I'm a private detective.""Oh?" said Kate in surprise, and then looked puzzled.
"Does that bother you?"
"It's just that I have a friend who plays the double bass."
"I see," said Dirk.
"Whenever people meet him and he's struggling around with it, they all say the same thing, and it drives him crazy. They all say, 'I bet you wished you played the piccolo.' Nobody ever works out that that's what everybody else says. I was just trying to work out if there was something that everybody would always say to a private detective so that I could avoid saying it."
"No. What happens is that everybody looks very shifty for a moment, and you got that very well."

@yakovbr Dá uma olhada nos meus posts e compartilhamentos (ainda vem mais).
97% of Americans want Russia to exit Ukraine.
88% are extremely concerned about corruption in the US government.
80% support the ACA.
73% support legal immigration.
71% are worried about inflation.
67% disapprove of the Iran war.
67% disapprove of broad import tariffs.
64% support legal access to abortion in all or most cases.
61% say the US is on the wrong track across the board.
60% disapprove of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
58% support anti-discrimination protections for transgender people.
@Cdespinosa Where do these numbers come from?
When things are hectic, it's okay to say no or tell someone to ask you again later.
Oh, and 63% of Americans understand that climate change is real, happening, and caused by burning hydrocarbons, and support expanding non-carbon energy sources. The latter is supported by 58% of Republican voters.
The age gap is telling: 81% of younger Americans support government action on climate change compared to 44% of older Americans.
No qualitative polling exists on whether that is due to “I’ll be dead when it happens so fuck ‘em”
@Cdespinosa The biggest problem in America is the number of people who hate the idea of freedom for other people very much more than they love the idea of freedom for themselves

Zelenskyy with the receipts:
Quote from Zelenskyy: "To understand whether these are really technical problems at SpaceX, or whether it is some kind of operation or agreement to restrict us, to disconnect us, to prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people... we sent a couple of cars with Starlink to the territory of European Union countries, and they drove at speeds of over 180 km/h where permitted. Starlink works. We have the corresponding records and the corresponding evidence."

@GeePawHill The one just off the 400 with the IKEA ?
@rhempel I think so!
Meanwhile, Larry Ellison and his pals have locked out of TikTok the account promoting the new, scathing documentary about Elon Musk.
Big (Tech) Media is on a censorship rampage aimed to shut down the critics of the escalating right-wing extremism.
@dangillmor >We can't let the Chinese own this platform because it will be used to further their political agenda!
It really is remarkable how in every instance you can determine what the right wing is planning to do just by looking at what they decry.
I wholeheartedly believe that every man should watch this video, because i bet none can grasp quite how terribly women get treated, even at work, without being challenged
@thisisjofrank:
“I gave a talk at EMF titled "Men in Tech #YesAllMen", in which I told my experience of being a woman in tech. I was afraid to publish it in case it affected my current or future employment.
With all the current news I would like to add my 2¢. So here is the recording:”
When I first learned about CollapseOS four years ago, I thought that it's a very cool concept, but did find the idea "you'll have to implement from scratch everything in your computing stack" very disconnected from the reality. Like, what kind of plausible scenario could there be that one won't be able to get system software for their computer that they could trust to be of safe origin, free from backdoors and malware, and fit for the purpose, I thought.
Ha-ha.
@thomasfuchs awesome. and now, it's time for me to go re-listen to the entire Race for Space album from Public Service Broadcasting
Although, I don’t think PMOD headers will be too happy at receiving a 100MHz clock…
@jpm they'll receive the clock ok, but so will everything nearby as half of it escapes into the ether
I decided to finally get off my lazy ass, dust off my blog and write a new post. Where I ramble on about existential dread and how I'm avoiding that. Updating all of you on what I've been doing lately and what some of my plans are.

@lisamelton Excellent!
Funny true story: When I traveled for work, I always found a hotel that had or was very near a bar, cuz, you know, it's me.
Once outside Toronto, the hotel I stayed in was part of a big circular complex, and the only bar was a Dave & Buster's across the wide parking lot.
