The older I get, the more valuable quiet becomes.
A1 hi, I'm Quixoticgeek, a maker in the Netherlands. What do I make ? All sorts of things, I work in wood, metal (Machining, forging, fabrication), 3d printing, ceramics, sewing, knitting, leatherwork. As a friend recently described me "a whore of all hobbies"
@quixoticgeek
I reckon many of us could be described as 'hobby whores'!
😁
Here's an image you'll be grateful you're only seeing on your screen.
@jon_ellis @davidgerard Some genius scam artist is going to latch onto Roger Penrose's crazycakes quantum brain hypothesis from "The Emperor's New Mind" as the grift for their new AI project. Any day now.
my day is better, now that the word "crazycakes" has crept into my vocabulary on soft little kitten feet.
AI industry says Trump plans to tax chips in the “single dumbest way imaginable”
Tech industry is perplexed by Trump’s plan to win AI race by taxing data centers.

@arstechnica Every day Trump wakes up, he sets out to do something in the dumbest way possible. This is not new.
"Authorized fetch" is now on. The setting says "Requiring authentication from federated servers enables stricter enforcement of both user-level and server-level blocks. However, this comes at the cost of a performance penalty, reduces the reach of your replies, and may introduce compatibility issues with some federated services. In addition, this will not prevent dedicated actors from fetching your public posts and accounts." This used to be part of .env.production but is now in the admin UI /
If there's a strong consensus to turn that back off again, we can do that. I'm just the janitor.
@jonny there’s a guy on TikTok named Chef Moe who makes $5 meals with ingredients from the dollar store and they all look pretty great. Using Slim Jims is an intentional choice.
Parasocial overanalyzing
@tedmielczarek
I'm hoping my post above isn't coming across as like "shaming poor folks for their dietary choices" because that's not what I was intending, I think the video is just sort of fascinating in the same way I find the rest of his videos fascinating. Like he does try to do "bits" where he is e.g. mimicking canonical shortform video tropes because he thinks of himself as an influencer to some degree, but also you can tell he can't quite commit to the bits because he's just a very sincere guy. So here its like "doing the bit of a anti-cooking channel with a two ingredient meal" but then its clear he actually just eats that wat.
The beginning of the video fucks me up every time. He has prepared a title card and had like a grand intro in his mind, but when he gets there he sort of fucks up and says the wrong thing and trails off... "Its cooking 101.. Do it... Whatever the hell ya got... New reci.... NOW!" And just crumples that idea up, trashes it, and on to forgetting what kinds of beans we have.
After pretty much every video I am just left with an audible "WHAT!?"
OK the virus thing I said about the Votrax SAPI installer was a false alarm. I did not read the notification when I got it, it actually said
Security scan required. To protect your device, Microsoft Defender Antivirus needs to perform a cloud security scan. The scan could take up to 10 seconds.. . .
The upcoming Bigme HiBreak Dual 3 is an upcoming dual-screen smartphone with E Ink and LCD displays. The specs are very similar to the HiBreak Dual 2, but the design has been updated so it doesn't look as much like two phones stuck together. https://www.ithome.com/0/995/144.htm #BigmeHiBreakDual3 #BigmeHiBreakDual #DualScreenSmartphone #EInkSmartphone
Hey, everyone remember that guy who said the Internet was a passing fad and then, when it was obviously wrong, quickly added a chapter to his autobiography to pretend that he knew it was an important development all along? You know, the guy who was friends with Epstein?
Apparently he now has opinions about AI.
@david_chisnall Is it the guy who got his wife a std and tried to medicate her in secret?
@pussreboots Happy Birthday!!
@farah Thank you.
@ajroach42 @loriemerson Just ordered. Thanks for the recommendation!
Hell yeah, it's a great book.
Q1:
Who (are you)?
What (do you make from)?
Where (are you based)?
Why (are you here)?
When (do you do your best making)?
Please answer any two (or three) you want.

I've been working on things involving other ways of computing.
I've been re-reading @loriemerson's book (https://www.hemlockbazaar.com/product/other-networks-a-radical-technology-sourcebook-emerson-lori-hardcover/ Other Networks: A Radical Technology Sourcebook) and thinking about what could be different.
I've been going over old notes and thinking about what I want from computers, and drawing diagrams and really just trying to understand how I can have a relationship with computers that isn't defined by capital.

Should we turn on authorized fetch?
Without it on, "followers only" posts are visible to people who aren't logged on. It might do other checks. If you've tried to view toots on their original server and been told it isn't visible, it's that. If no one is opposed, I'll turn it on.
