The question is, will the establishment - mainstream media, high courts, etc - and centrist voters make the same mistake they made in Europe in the 1930s - or have they learnt the lesson that the left promises economic change, and threatens only wealth and privilege, but the right threatens complete social disintegration ?

Part of the answer I'm sure lies in the US: will Trump's regime end in economic and social chaos soon enough to provide a new object lesson on the disaster of extreme right government ?

There is nothing ‘shades of grey’ about it.

When my grandma and others told these stories of the 30s, I never understood why people were so complacent. Now I have witnessed it myself - they simply do not care (enough).

(Doesn’t mean the 40s will happen again, but everything is lining up that way 😭.)

This is not some hollywood dystopia - that's really telling you about the wealthy and privileged's fear, that social collapse implies lawless violence - this is reality: that in the face of disaster, people co-operate, selflessly help each other, rediscover a humanity and community they had almost forgotten, or that had been almost hidden from them.
