The Japanese government will continue measures to keep retail prices of regular gasoline at around ¥170 per liter amid ongoing instability in the Middle East, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Tuesday. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/08/26/gasoline-price-keep/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #gas #energy #middleeast #japaneseeconomy #sanaetakaichi

The French presidential election next year looks likely to lead to a second round between the extreme right and the far left - https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2026/08/24/french-poll-shows-le-pen-s-biggest-challenger-may-be-hard-left-s-melenchon_6756806_7.html
The question is, will the establishment - mainstream media, high courts, etc - and centrist voters make the same mistake they made in Europe in the 1930s - or have they learnt the lesson that the left promises economic change, and threatens only wealth and privilege, but the right threatens complete social disintegration ?
Part of the answer I'm sure lies in the US: will Trump's regime end in economic and social chaos soon enough to provide a new object lesson on the disaster of extreme right government ?

26 August 1938 | Dutch Jewish boy, Louis Ikkersheim, was born in The Hague.
He was deported to #Auschwitz from #Westerbork in October 1942. He was murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

@marcoarment @matt_birchler In countries that suffered through fascist and nazi regimes, we have a word for people who work with such regimes for their own gain, ‘collaborateur’.
There is nothing ‘shades of grey’ about it.
When my grandma and others told these stories of the 30s, I never understood why people were so complacent. Now I have witnessed it myself - they simply do not care (enough).
(Doesn’t mean the 40s will happen again, but everything is lining up that way 😭.)
We've been getting a lot of questions about how the Internet Archive digitizes books.
The short answer: page by page, by hand.
You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it.

Joining multiple tailnets at once would be a lateral attack vector, which is very dangerous. You can use node sharing to make a node available on multiple tailnets in a controlled way though.

Another lovely morning. Loch Shieldaig: 06:00
I ruined it. 90 seconds per side was too much.

One of my favorite Dolly Parton stories that she told often was that she entered a Dolly Parton look-a-like contest without revealing her true identity and she came in second place… to a drag queen. She told that story with love and laughter. #DollyParton
Climate optimism from a French village destroyed by wildfire:
"The mayor, Martial Zaninetti, who is not affiliated with any political party, said that after 35 years living in Le Porge, he had discovered "a new face of community." Mathou Lantié, a volunteer at the community café La Grange A Tiroirs – where villagers gather for activities, a drink or conversation – said that "all the barriers have come down between generations, the masks have dropped. We talk, we give and receive like never before." She has met more people since July 21 than she had in 20 years living here."

This is not some hollywood dystopia - that's really telling you about the wealthy and privileged's fear, that social collapse implies lawless violence - this is reality: that in the face of disaster, people co-operate, selflessly help each other, rediscover a humanity and community they had almost forgotten, or that had been almost hidden from them.
