@glyph Do you know anyplace to post jobs specifically of the form “we are *not* demanding you use LLMs?” My company is trying to find a new Infra lead and all the candidates are… not actually able to do the work, many because they appear to be mostly ChatGPT by volume. It just occurred to me you might have a suggestion.
Only managed this kind of shitty photo before they flew off, but look, I saw a Canada jay!!
Cat and Girl Versus the Warping Effect of Any Medium Assumed to Be a Description of Reality
@georgeharito yeah it's not as common as I thought either - like the BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin even the new updated one, doesn't have it at all. But the BYD Seal and Sealion 7, both have it.
@decryption ... reckon we slowly need a mandatory minimum "feature" list for modern cars enforced by ACCC kinda thing: doors that can be opened from the outside without requiring electric power, rearview camera, buttons/knobs for certain functions (the so-called "fuck the touchscreen" mode), driver profile for seat positions/mirrors, quarterly map updates for GPS system, ban on E.T.-phone-home traffic over WiFi/Phone to countries-that-we-shall-not-explicitly-name-here, etc. @georgeharito
@r1w1s1 It's hard to remove the context from that one. Supporting their project normalizes the things they say, and they're some pretty bad people.
I understand your point. For me, the interest is in the code and the technical direction, not in endorsing anyone's personal views.
Absolutely fascinating to hear that the 7 up series will be concluding, 63 years later, with 70 up.
If you're not familiar with British television (and maybe obscure British television? I feel like I only know about the series because of my work in video art, and not because of TV) 7 up was a documentary series that started as interviews with 14 random seven year olds, and became a series of interview's with those same 14 kids ever seven years as they aged.
That crew, of course, is now 70. The original director is gone, but the 14 people were interviewed once again, and a new director is bringing the series ot a close.
Apparently, one of their number passed away shortly after shooting his last interview, solidifying the idea that this will be the end of the series.
Bus crash debris as Lamp.
meanwhile, over on the blue butterfly web site, I think maybe they're starting to get nervous. remember when the blue bird web site started doing this?
Tonight's Low Quality Ad is for this Music Penguin Shirt. March of the Penguins was originally supposed to be a musical, with Hugh Jackman playing the lead penguin. Changes were made after focus groups described the movie as "deeply confusing".

PSAs are a right old pain to get right and you rarely please everyone 8)
Your message is important and I'm grateful for you deploying your spidey senses for good!
True. But that was a really great point. Folks definitely don’t need the impression that Mastodon has a security flaw where one doesn’t exist. We need to be building up the value of this amazing social network.
hmmm the Jellyfin upgrade to 12 seems to have deleted my user accounts. It's like a brand new server. So sad but not that bad.
Pondering something. Maybe you all can help me. If I were to start a Patreon for my weekly podcast, Entrepreneur’s Enigma, would anyone sign up?
What kind of perks would people want? Obviously no commercial break on the Patreon channel. But what else?
Hit reply and let me know!
"While Buckmaster and Alpöge were finalizing their own results, they learned that “information about our progress had been passed to OpenAI.” When they contacted OpenAI, they were told that OpenAI had already achieved a full proof of the central problem. But when they asked follow-up questions about when OpenAI had begun its research into the problem and how much human input was involved, the answers became more evasive.
“It emerged that an entire team had been working on the problem,” Buckmaster said, “and that an insane amount of compute had been used…. Eventually, it was agreed that [the first prompt] had been sent in the past few days, after information about our work had reached OpenAI.”
If true, that would suggest the OpenAI team had become convinced that Buckmaster and Alpöge’s approach was the right one, and decided to use its material advantage in computing resources to reach a formal proof first."

Signal bridges like this are found every few miles along the former Pennsylvania Railroad's Northeast Corridor, but these particular signals are unusual. They're used to warn oncoming trains of a temporary interruption in voltage between two track sections fed by different power substations, called a "phase break". There are only a handful of them in the system.
Infrastructure is heroic.
@mattblaze I had to re-read this a few times before I realized you meant permanently temporary in distance, and not temporarily permanent in time. 😌

I can’t wait to play this Ocarina of Time with my son, it looks perfect!
Wow this has been a busy and long several weeks, but I can see the light at the end of a tunnel at an important work project. 🤞

There’s a gendered angle on youth and screen time I haven’t seen discussed much. Everyone is like OMG young women are getting their self esteem ruined on the internets!!! Okay, well can that tween girl safely travel alone at night to get to the activities she’s interested in? Will she be treated with respect and allowed uniforms she’s comfortable with if she takes up a sport? Can she experiment with fashion that makes her happy without getting leered at by strangers in public? Disappearing into the online world is a logical response by young women in a sexist world
