Ok, I'm going to do @Tamasg a favor. Pantera speech got an update, and we also have a sapi5 version. Sapi version: https://github.com/tgeczy/panthera-speech/releases/download/pantheraspeech%2Fv1.1.0/panthera-sapi-1.1.0-setup.exe
NVDA addon: https://github.com/tgeczy/panthera-speech/releases/download/pantheraspeech%2Fv1.1.0/pantheraspeech-1.1.0.nvda-addon
You should read the article on the US - Canadian trade negotiations. Partly because it's astute, but mainly because of the way it's written in Australian is even better (see the glossary!)
"So the escalation loop is armed, loaded and rotating ... and the whole neighbourhood is up shit creek in a barbed wire canoe arguing about who’s got the paddle."
"Strength, my arse. The bloke’s lost his nail gun and he’s out there trying to build a deck with a rock while calling himself a master builder."

@eamon It's the first I've heard of this song. Pretty good beatboxing.
@cstanhope De La Soul released 3 Feet High and Rising in '89, and that's the oldest hip hop record that I keep on a regular rotation.
There were some gems before that (like La Di Da Di), but 3 Feet was hip hop's "British invasion moment", IMHO. After that—and then Low End Theory by Tribe in '91—it felt like rap music knew what it was.

What if Hunter S Thompson was from Dubbo?

@codinghorror Well, it sort of spurted a few times, then it trickled.
Hey! You said beginner, how beginner are we talking about here ?
I always think that if you can sew a few basic stitches, read your pattern thoroughly, and take it all slow and steady, then quite a few projects will be open to you.
Not going to lie, this pattern could throw some curveballs. Looks like there is cording and eyelets on the back for a "corseted" closure? If so, you will need a specific eyelet tool, similar to a holepunch. And that looks like a bucketload of trim. BUT some minor adjustments could be made to lessen the stress.
Can I be bold and make a few suggestions:
First try to thrift your fabric at a charity shop vs going to a special fabric shop. And look at the drapery section for some great brocades etc. If the top is lined, even plain cotton sheeting fabric will suffice for the lining. Again you can visit a charity shop and grab a previously loved sheet or pillowcase.
I would start with the skirt first as it looks to be only a few pieces. When done THEN decide if you want to make that bustle at the back.
Hold off buying any trim. If you can pick up some awesome fabric, it might look nice without the embellishment. Or perhaps just on the top. This could also be attached with fabric glue so no sewing required! 😁
I wish you luck and look forward to seeing your handy work. Remember, there are persons here with all levels of skills and expertise so reach out with any questions!
@passenger @mxchara there was! he got basic shit wrong and actual physicists realised he was an idiot
the point was to demonstrate that because all subatomic particles of a given type are indistinguishable, therefore a copy of you is also you. this is necessary for you to accept that the computer emulation of you is actually you living forever.
@davidgerard @passenger @mxchara so a lot of the time when people come to dunk on Yudkowsky they miss, but you have the receipts and the advice I would give, here.
I'll say this: a lot of them _have_ read HPMOR. They are, like it or not, very often compulsive readers, and HPMOR feels very fun to be let in on to a certain kind of reader.
I liked it! Fifteen years ago, in a different world. I'm not going to _stand by it_ or anything. But it was fun.

Cliff’s brilliance as a hacker is self-evident. But his brilliance as a storyteller is a bit deceptive. He makes it look like the spontaneous, incoherent ravings of a deranged madman. But every word is actually a perfectly crafted step on a path he’s guiding you down.
@mattblaze I just found out his ted talk and i think its gloirous.
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) - Fedi.Video Edition with modern soundtrack (gothic horror romance silent film)
@mxchara @passenger Yudkowsky was actually socialised by anime. he has never read or watched any artistic work aimed above middle school, unless it's hentai.
@davidgerard @mxchara @passenger That "unless" is load bearing. You know he's a tentacle man.
In which I try to clarify the issues around #GenAI watermarking its text output without requiring readers to be computer professionals: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2026/08/24/Text-Watermarking
@timbray These sound more like checksums than watermarks. For a watermark I'd expect non-printing characters in the output, not this. If I read correctly, this is "the text is the same but you make an API call to verify whether the generator wants to take credit". That's a fuzzy variant of comparing a download to its hash.
Since I'm not about to send every piece of text I see to an LLM vendor, I'm skeptical of the use case.
AI ESCAPED CONTAINMENT AND ROLLERBLADED
My concern is that this ruling will get translated as "Trump/SCOTUS has outlawed vote-by-mail", which is simply not true.
No one should alter their voting plans for 2026 based on today's ruling.
@mattblaze If the USPS refuses to deliver ballots, whether they legally can or not, it'll disrupt mail voting. I agree with you about not needing to do anything now, but I'd keep an eye on the situation as the election nears.
Having them deliver the blank ballots but then accept and hold the returned ballots would be the hardest to deal with.
If, like me, you find it impossible to believe that this was 40 years ago, you're probably overdue for a colonoscopy.

on another note, do you have the title of that background music by any chance?
JAWS users, rejoice! Panthera Speech 1.1.0 finally supports both 32-bit and 64-bit SAPI 5! Enjoy Alex if you like that. It also comes with several other important fixes. As with pretty much everything in the SAPI 5 world, though, the non-SAPI version for NVDA is more responsive. But hey, SAPI 5 has its own fans too. https://github.com/tgeczy/panthera-speech/releases/tag/pantheraspeech%2Fv1.1.0 @Tamasg @serrebi
