Without the FCC, radio technology would be far more advanced and efficient.
@bobdobberson There was an apocryphal story about the world's cheapest cellular services being in Somalia where there was (is?) no regulator.

@mikebabcock @adamgreenfield (to give an example: the conflict over the past year and a half between the Syrian government and the autonomous Kurdish regions was, among other things, a conflict over which definition of democracy to use)
@julieofthespirits @mikebabcock Oh, absolutely. Or the Russian Revolution, in which the central drama pitted the Bolshevik conception of soviet democracy against what they regarded (with some justice, it might be added) as mere bourgeois parliamentarianism. Or Hong Kong, rather more recently. Or or or.
Any conception of democracy that treats it as something static and neutral and settled, rather than the very ground of contestation, is handing power to *someone*. The question is then: to whom?
ok so bisecting an angle with a compass and straightedge is a pretty direct corollary of the even numbers being a ring closed under multiplication and addition? yes? ok great. now what else
ok so angle bisection corresponds to the ring operation. there's also a very clear higher-dimensional analogy for pythagorean triples and it's just the same thing as the "euclidean" norm?????
@Elizafox It has for many of those things, it's just that that sells itself on both cost and output in most of those cases so you don't need to polish "give us money to do a worse job" with a generalized marketing term for those.
@dimitriosmegalos Great photo!
@phillycodehound thank you 🙏🏼
also i did spend a good deal of time trying to find an actual living example of euclid's elements and all i could find was some fucking cambridge asshole saying outright that he had written every part of it himself. and of course it all acted like "formalism" was such a huge fucking important thing back in ancient fucking greco-mathematics
@hipsterelectron not as nice as a danged facsimile but fun: https://www.c82.net/euclid/
guess it’s time to learn some fedi dev with fedify

growing up, i listened to at least one song about riding a train
growing up, i listened to at least one song about riding a train
@Lady This is a personal failing and shouldn't drive any actions or emotions in other people I am uncomfortable with the idea that I might be in the same poll-bucket next to someone who only had a single train song growing up. Like, people have all sorts of histories and experiences, but what would such a childhood be LIKE--!?

Mad SF idea: the Hollow Earth theory is semi-correct, except Earth isn't a hollow sphere, it's a Klein bottle.
@cstross Klein bottle goes to a psychiatrist. She asks “what’s wrong?” The bottle replies “Where do I even *begin*?”
Apparently we've just seen the first murders committed by an autonomous AI-driven weapon.
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/24/world/europe/russia-drones-autonomous-ai-kill-ukraine-war.html
In this case the weapon was a drone, it was Russian, and the victims were Ukrainian civilians. We're bound to see endless variations on this theme, starting now.
@petersuber No different to Nazi V1 "doodle bug" autonomous drones during WWII.
It's only an incremental advance.
The murderers are those that launched it.
Both indiscriminate.
It may only be the first used by the Russians.

Me: "Are you thinking more Rage Against The Machine, or, like, Woody Guthrie?"

After the Washington Post fired me last year for speaking the truth in the wake of the Charlie Kirk killing, I fought back.
And I'm happy to announce: I won my case against the Washington Post.
They have been ordered to reinstate me immediately.
