Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's government sees little chance of resuming talks with President Donald Trump before the midterm elections after trade talks collapsed. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/08/24/economy/canada-long-trade-war-us-midterms/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #economy #markcarney #us #donaldtrump #republicans #trade #tariffs #canada
My store has a 4.7 rating on google maps, the same as the Musée du Louvre in Paris. They are equally good
@sayrer I learned the OG meaning maybe 15 years ago — I'd guessed it meant old guard — and the person who told me laughed at my ignorance. But it's not a very mainstream idiom, I don't think.
@stshank It is very easy for someone that grew up on "Yo! Mtv Raps". They played that song forever.
We can consult Urban Dictionary: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=O.G.
But it does actually mean "old guard" if you squint.
"Well it's a dessert, not a prescription medicine..."
That... doesn't make any difference? I feel like the FDA would be like 'cool story, now give us the ingredients list'.
Great Danes always look so much smaller in films than they actually are.
Still, kind of funny that they had to use a puppet to get that to work. I wouldn't think it'd be that hard to get a Great Dane to let you put a bunch of whipped cream in its mouth. (Might take a few takes to get it to not eat it all though.)
[…] Behind AI is an enormous, deliberately hidden web of human labor. Data workers are paid as little as $2 an hour to render data legible to machines—recruited, often, from places where the poor economic conditions made such wage appealing.
@Em0nM4stodon Forgot to add, this is all contingent on the assumption Microsoft doesn't have a remote kill switch in all of its products - if they decided to ever do such a thing during an act of war for example, we would be totally screwed, as even our offline machines run Windows - and are not "totally" offline - they're on a specially isolated network that only sync the forms - buuuut backdoors be backdoors. 🫥
So yeah, maybe we should probably all try getting off of Windows...
@Javensbukan Ah yes, excellent point

I'm not the first to point out that the US seems to be going the kind of extreme hypernormalization the USSR went through in the decade or 2 before it collapsed. See the 2016 Adam Curtis film on the subject.
Nor am I the first to say that there's a good chance we'll see the US fall apart in my lifetime. Paul Buchanan, a former Pentagon analyst now based in Aotearoa, has said as much on the A View From Afar podcast. Notably he also said this is much easier to see from outside the country.

Even if the US survives the next couple of decades, with its current boundaries, it won't be in its current form.
Either it will continue its slide towards having Emperors instead of elected Presidents, or it will manage to reform the constitution to prevent that. Including by adding language confirming that money isn't speech, so people can't use their wealth to buy election results, and thus increase their wealth. Forcing SCOTUS to undo Citizens United, and preventing a repeat

@mttaggart doesn’t the config come along with a PSK no matter what?
@glyph No. It comes with an asymmetric key. The PSK is extra.
Hahaha red tailed hawk call!!!

The Stuff is a movie about how many actors clearly not from the south you can get to attempt a southern accent, and the results are fascinating and beautiful #monsterdon
Aight, my flippin arm is literally going to fall off if I don't get out of this chair and lie down somewhere that takes the pressure off my yoke and shoulder joint.
Reposting this because I want it to be the last thing on my timeline tonight - help me save a cat named Atticus through small dollar donations:
Urgent: I need $3,000 to save a my friend Paul's feline furbaby and I have about 5-6 days to do it. Pictured below is Atticus. Atticus is a sweet boi who is caught between a vet and a hard place. He needs surgery that costs real money and if he can't get it, he'll be put down. If he can get the money, the prognosis is good. I'm donating $300, we need $2700 to save Atticus. You can send money via Venmo (@PaulDitz) CashAp ($PaulDitz) or Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/PaulDitz
I vouch for this fundraiser.
Someone complained that I've been posting about cats too much lately. So naturally, tonight's Low Quality Ad is for this Louis Wain Cat Blanket. Keep the complaints coming buddy, there's more where this came from.
