Mad SF idea: the Hollow Earth theory is semi-correct, except Earth isn't a hollow sphere, it's a Klein bottle.
People in the UK, does your kerbside recycling accept (some) batteries?
@neil Loads of shops in my area have collection point or you can take them to the tip.
I have a Ugreen 20Ah power pack that's fantastic! Most useful feature is the USB-C cable sticking out of it, so I never have to find a cable somewhere.
It's a bit big for my pocket though. Do any of you have a 5000mAh power pack with a USB tail like this? I've found a few in searches, I'm after personal experiences.
@cstross @ChrisMayLA6 that’d be my guess but at very low confidence. Far too much we don’t know. Could be whole swathes of life we can’t recognise.
@Colman @ChrisMayLA6 We already know that there's a huge amount of biota lurking underground in the crust—not photosynthetic, unicellular, often obligate anaerobes—and I expect other rocky planets orbiting in the triple phase zone for water to be similar, especially if they have a tectonic subduction system stirred up by a large moon.
That set of conditions is rare but hardly likely to be uniquely so.
Big success of this week: I got all my coworkers to stop using LLMs by making a pretty good security and data protection argument.
Please clap.

Blogpost coming later, but I wrote a plugin for @dthompson 's #haunt static site generator, that lets you use #orgmode as your post format using #pandoc.
I wrote it because the gap between Emacs ('the' Scheme editor) and Haunt ('the' Scheme SSG) was annoying me, but I'm hoping it's general enough to maybe be useful to someone else too. Feedback welcome. My code sure could use experienced eyes...
Let me know if you end up using it!
@heavyimage It's ADHD wolves all the way down.
@woozle explains a lot
This summer..... Jason Statham.... is............ Jason Statham.......... in........... JASON STATHAM.
"I'm Jason Statham"
- Jason Statham
@TheBreadmonkey @i_give_u_worms I would definitely watch that. Look, I love going to the ICA to see three-hour Portuguese epic about an 18th-century aristocrat walking to Munich to buy a goose or something but I am very happy to spend a Friday evening watching the 27th incarnation of The Statham Film.
@krusynth
There is a misprint in the Alt Text, that changes the meaning: it says "mines" instead of "mimes".
@rupdecat oh, that's just me. Most blogs will not list citations to blog posts anyway, but I think in the future Rogue Scholar will make it possible to just embed the data from their with a standard Hugo/Wordpress/etc plugin
@egonw
Yes, perhaps. Can't say I will. It is far more likely to listen to real scientific discussions in contemporary podcasts or to read in rare but good editorials than in blogs - or I am simply not aware of such blogs.
@rnd Apparently that idea was copied from Stargate? (...which I've never watched...)
@woozle likewise
i'm only barely listening to the episode, tbf, i'mma wait until all 10 are available on the local torrent tracker and watch them then
Thousands rally in Stockholm over climate crisis weeks ahead of general election
https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2026/08/23/thousands-rally-in-stockholm-over-climate-crisis-weeks-ahead-of-general-election
The protest comes as experts in Sweden have warned that the government's climate policy jeopardises the country's emissions-cutting goals to reduce CO₂ emissions from transport by 70 percent by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.
TIL the Netherlands hides massive rubbish bins underground so their streets stay clean 🤯
@TheBreadmonkey we had those in my town (near Madrid) but were removed not long ago, I don't know why.
@Em0nM4stodon what answer corresponds to whatever Linux system-L does? Turns off the monitors, logs out, but doesn't do a full suspend, I don't think?
