It’s true that AI is leading to increased software output—whenever I have a need for specific software I find like 3 separate vibe-coded abandoned code repositories with all files from like 4 months ago and it’s very shiny and doesn’t work at all.
@thomasfuchs I don’t remember what it was, but I was looking for a tool and found three different abandoned GitHub projects from the last 12 months that all had Claude commits and all did almost the exact same thing in the same way. Two of them had bug reports for the exact same issue too! And none of them did all of the things the readme claimed they could do.

But I did double and triple-check that the letters were accurate before mailing them out...

i remember the world before AI. some people have called me a genius in the past, not because i know everything, but because of how quickly i learn everything. for example, i learned how to solder in a month, and got really good at it in a month. the photo shows how i soldered after a month of practise (this one several years after, but i did stuff like this after only a month)
in 2013, i had no idea how a package manager worked, then accidentally reinvented package management when i started the libreboot project. libreboot is a package manager for building coreboot images. after a year, i thought: hang on, this is just like debian apt-get!

I support codes of conduct for projects. I can't ignore the horrible views of an author to let me enjoy their writing. And so on.
To my mind, a community - humanity! - is about more than code, and I don't buy a "make the code better at all costs" argument.

i recently wrote that I become anti-AI, having previously been neutral towards it - critical in some aspects, positive in others.
when you use AI, you stop thinking. you don't reason about anything. google search really annoys me, because it's so seductive when the bot tells you what you want, regardless of whether it's true... and you're enticed to *not* click links anymore

This is really insidious. Even really smart people get sucked into it. My friend is one such person, but lots of really smart people I know seem to be taken by it.

Looks like the best database of meteors (and also reentries) just got taken out by a cyberattack. That really sucks. I hope they are able to get back online soon, that info is really useful to a lot of scientists (including me).
