Last week, after a disastrous welcome speech to first years at ENS, which got CS faculty raging at the line "I know you are all using AI now", we tried a little spontaneous survey. Apparently, only ~4/23 CS students in this CS cohort use AI regularly. When we said the default mode was to not use it for assignments because we want them to learn, there was nodding in the room, and apparently the previous cohorts did this too without needing an explicit policy.

It was so nice to have my first exercice class in more than a year with them today. They were thrilled to learn about Turing machines. Maybe not all is doomed? Or at least some kids are alright, and just as curious as ever!

German is an interesting language. Adding "be-" to "schaffen" ("to make") turns it into "beschaffen" ("to make something be made"... which somehow means "to procure"). And "Nahme" ("exception") somehow comes from the verb "nehmen" ("to take").

@neil Remember that most apps, in fact essentially *all* apps, have a lot of software library dependencies. So avoiding AI completely becomes tricky, just as with Linux. It is possible to scrupulously avoid AI in your own project (a stance which I wholeheartedly approve of), but to still have the rug pulled out from under you by libraries, or even things like the kernel. Although purism is well meant, I'm concerned it may kill off FLOSS faster and more effectively it kills off LLM use.

I worked for one the biggest Advertising agencies in the world for almost a decade. Ad-Blockers were installed on everyone's work computers by default, the entire time.
