I'm going to add my two cents. I was born in 87. It means I have memories of the Aids Epidemic allbeit the end. It was still on the news. The first ever movie I went to in theaters was Beauty and the Beast. I was conviced I would be terrified of the Beast. I should have been afraid of Gaston but I digress.
My mom wanted me to be terrified of something else. She told me the bitter, filthy queers were putting AIDs needles in theater seats so we suffered like "they" did. One of her godly children could not be a filthy queer.
I remember bullies trying to beat and stone me. Tho it was generally more insults than fists thrown at me, both were done. Queer, Faggot, woman. So filthy I deserve AIDs. I remember high profile people being fired in the late 90s and early 2000s after coming out. I remember my sister coming home with a ring on her finger from her girlfriend and the resultant screaming. She ate her gal pals out in the closet after that.
Long story short there was no flags hanging at the UN. There was no argument for them to be taken down because nobody would dare to put them up. There was no safe place. There was hatred. There was bullying and there was closets.
My sister once decided to stay up late and watch Rocky Horror Picture show to rebel against my parents. It was forbidden. It was for queers and liberals. Not for good Christian "heterosexual children". What Rocky Horror picture show was and still is, is community for those of us robbed of it. The idea that I could see a rainbow flag in a mall or hanging from the Landesrat or the Bundestag has brought a tear to my eyes. There was nothing.
And for my lesbian Grandmother it was even worse. In the 70s that film could have ended Tim Curry. It became an icon. It became a meeting place for LGBT everywhere. Are the terms outdated? Sure but when I was a kid there really was L and G and both of those were either a social or true death sentence. The vernacular for LGBT people has changed dramatically in my lifetime.
I don't see people antagonising him for retreating to the only place capitalism hasn't gotten it's grubby hands "in space" or for the Cardinal Richelieu. I don't see people antagonizing him in for starring in a film where a frog and a pig love eachother. I see liberals and leftists antagonizing a cultural treasure that has become a safe space for trans and otherwise queer people.
Whether you mean it or not. Whether you know it or not. Whether you respect it or not. By attacking Tim Curry and Rocky Horror you are shrinking our safe spaces and our safety. Stop being a puritantical little bitch. You aren't helping. You are demonizing Rocky Horror exactly like my mother did. Just using different words.
It's always concerning to me how much liberals and leftists are obsessed with not being transphobic. It's discirimination when a neo nazi exposes a trans person and puts them in danger. It's abuse when a parent cuts a child of from the LGBT community. It's just doxxing and caring about what's right when a white leftist does it.
Here's a hint, shut your mouth if you can't respect our safe spaces and our history. That absolutely and 100% includes Rocky Horror Picture show.
